City Attorney H H Russell invites engineers, contractors, and builders to a Monday 10 a.m. meeting at the city hall to discuss adopting a comprehensive building code. The gathering will include city commissioners mayor engineer and inspectors as part of the code deliberations.
Paris May 9 Henry Farman promotes blind airplanes in a pilot school using gauges instead of sight. He says gauges can be read as fast as a book and recounts his own test flight with a near crash avoided by instrument warnings. Twelve pilots, including Given, qualified to fly enclosed planes after hours of trials, then could fly blindly 30 miles out and back.
Riches fail to draw away 94 year old George W. Coleman from cooking. After leaving his Birmingham home he opens a small restaurant in Millport to pursue his life as a railroad cook for 65 years. He replies I have to cook and serves customers with his frying pan and stove.
The Monroe Welfare association logged 52 civilian cases and aided 18 able bodied soldiers. Thirteen disabled soldiers also received aid. Fifteen visits, twelve investigations, and information in 55 instances were reported. Railroad fare requests were carefully investigated. Grocery orders and house rents were provided. Mrs. J. J. Herring leads the association as president.
Madrid June 9 Primo de Rivera ends engagement with Merce des Castellanos after she was seen buying securities with Count Cimera and the Duke of Almondovalho. He announces plans to devote himself to governing Spain as premier and dictator. The wedding rumored to have Alfonso as best man is in doubt.
E R Strahan reports that 15 farm agents from 15 counties will tour Louisiana seeing farm methods. They will pass Bastrop on the way to Shreveport and inspect a large paper mill, Ouachita parish, and Sterlington power plant. A boll weevil dusting demonstration and field demonstrations are planned on their return June 20.
Claude M. Henry of South Dakota received a recess appointment from President Coolidge to the federal board of vocational education for three years from July 17, 1928, in what is described as a reappointment.
Baton Rouge reports quote S P Borden, head of independent oil producers group, asserting no agreement was reached on the McClanahan severance tax bill. He warns higher taxes would hurt small operators, noting Louisiana already imposes the nation’s highest rates and threatens to push wells out of profit.
In Biloxi Mississippi Judge F H Holmes sentenced fifteen defendants to ninety days each in federal court for liquor violations. Several prisoners face transfer to Warren county jail and Harrison jail due to prior sentences. Holmes issued an interlocutory decree for Welch Dry Kiln company of Missouri against Gilchrist Fordney Lumber of Laurel in a patent infringement case. W L Guice of Biloxi was named special master to assess damages. The suit aimed to stop use of a patented dry kiln device.
Ed Gofferes a Black man was waylaid and shot in Blanks alley by an unknown Black assailant last night. The weapon was a shotgun. He was taken to the Riverside sanitarium and listed as in satisfactory condition.
Ruston patrons learn that a new through train between Alexandria and Little Rock will make its initial run Sunday. The service features all steel coaches and an observation car with northbound through Ruston around 10 30 a m and southbound about 2 30 p m, with good connections at both Alexandria.
In Pine Bluff Arkansas fireman W R Delaney from North Little Rock was killed when he leaped from his engine as it smashed into a string of empty cars. Engineer B J Quinney escaped injury. No passengers were harmed. The Sunshine Special traveled about fifty miles per hour and the wreck involved empty cars on the main line.
Benjamin Brenn 34, Donaldsonville furniture store proprietor, drove to Audubon Park and shot himself in the temple, reportedly despondent over ill health and bad business. Found in his locked car on Lover's Lane, he was taken to a hospital and listed as dying.

D Stonewall Anderson general secretary of the board of education of the Methodist Episcopal Church South died at his Nashville home last night of a heart attack. He was 65 years old.
