The United States negotiates a further large aid package for Poland including wheat, cotton, fats and oils. Officials expect about 100 million dollars in surplus commodities to ease a farm crisis amid drought. Talks have run five weeks with aim to close soon.
Monroe mayor W L Jack Howard angrily denied aiding AFL CIO charges that he helped draft a bill to give the city council veto power over the utilities commission. He called the accusations ridiculous and said he opposed any change in the commission.
The Senate Education Committee endorsed a bill setting a minimum out-of-state tuition of 375 for state colleges and universities, notably including LSU, doubling the amount paid by nonresident students. The IAM strike against Convair delays two Atlas missile test launches at Cape Canaveral and broadens with quick strikes in San Diego. About 2,450 IAM members are out at missile bases and Convair facilities, slowing construction and operations including Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Fire officials said rubbish and cable insulation fueled the fire, which cut service between Brooklyn Bridge and 86th Street for about three hours on the Interborough Rapid Transit line.
