Negro Changes Statement On Fatal Shooting
O B Ziegler an 18 year old negro in jail after the fatal shooting of Cretex McClendon near Calhoun last week altered his account after Sheriff Coverdale returned with the revolver. He first said the weapon went off as McClendon twirled it, then claimed it discharged while loading and later said it fired as the chamber moved. Sheriff and deputy found the gun and showed it could not be opened with the hammer drawn back, prompting another change in his story. Ziegler remains in custody awaiting District Attorney Hawthorne’s review.
