The national Republican Convention opens with leaders taking their places, signaling the start of the gathering. Delegates prepare for speeches and party platforms as the event begins.
The Republican National Convention opened with enthusiasm as Harding was named temporary chairman amid calls for strong national defense and a united party. Roosevelt warned against Hughes, urging reform. Harding urged unity and continued defense, drawing loud applause from delegations and party supporters.
United States Senator Warren G. Harding of Ohio, serving as temporary chairman, urged reconciliation over recrimination at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. He praised Americanism, defended Republican policies, criticized Democratic measures on naval construction and the Philippines, and called for unity and reconsecration to restore the country.
Petrograd reports the Russians have captured more than 40,000 men in their latest offensive.
Berlin dispatches say the British dreadnought was sunk in the Jutland barrier despite British denials. Paris reports a German assault on Fort Vaux repulsed with heavy losses, French machine guns driving attackers from the fort as artillery duels continue at Hill 604 and in the Caurettes wood.

Thousands of suffragists marching along Michigan Boulevard toward the Coliseum parade under NAWSA regalia. Notables and march leaders include Carrie Chapman Catt and Anna Howard Shaw. The event, part of convention week, features a white banner line, yellow bunting, and a college women’s division in caps and gowns.
A huge women’s march drew alumnae from Vassar Wellesley Smith Bryn Mawr Northwestern Chicago Wisconsin Michigan Iowa and foreign born women with husbands who are now citizens. Polish women carried red white and blue parasols forming an American flag in formation and Kansas Wisconsin Michigan New York sent large contingents. Верх. Mrs Catt led a delegation to present the suffrage plank to the resolutions committee opposing the Congressional Union line on the Susan B Anthony amendment.

Memphis reports show more than 150 killed across Arkansas Missouri Mississippi Tennessee and Illinois from Monday night tornadoes. Property damage estimates run into hundreds of thousands with numerous missing in the Mississippi River packet Eleanore disaster and widespread destruction across counties including Jackson Vicksburg and Poplar Bluff.
A tornado-driven storm capsized the Lee Line steamer Eleanore about 26 miles north of Memphis while tied to the bank, killing thirty and leaving 25 to 30 missing. Most aboard were negro deck hands. two known dead are white passengers BR. C Weisiger and B. C Burks of Memphis. News delayed by wire outages. many victims were sheltering in cabins and between decks.
Chicago June 7 The Republican and Progressive National Conventions opened an hour apart amid growing hopes of harmony and a possible end to four years of bitter divisions. Senator Borah led a Western delegate canvass and urged Hughes as champion of justice while coordinating with George W. Perkins.
Chairman Hilles opened the Republican convention at 11 75 a m with 1982 delegates and alternates. The Progressive convention followed at noon led by Victor Murdock. Both adjourned for the day with sessions to resume tomorrow. The Suffragist parade was the day’s main afternoon event.
A spirited demonstration captivated onlookers lasting 34 minutes. Spectators cheered as participants displayed their cause with organized choreography, drawing strong public attention and engagement.
Chicago June 7. The Progressive convention opened with a massive Roosevelt demonstration after Chairman Robins announced Col. Roosevelt's name. Delegates cried We want Teddy as they cheered for over an hour, while insurgents contested permanent chairmanship and Governor Johnson resisted any bid to discard party unity.
Delegates chanted We want Teddy as they marched through aisles and surged toward the stage. Banners and Roosevelt posters waved frantically while the band played Marching Through Georgia. Sergeants and officers struggled to keep delegates off the stage. Continued on Page Eight.
