Manned Space Center in Houston Texas reports the successful end of Staf ford's three days in orbit with co pilot Eugene Cernan. AP Wirephoto shows the moment of return and briefing at the center.
Astronaut Eugene Cernan, a 32 year old rookie, describes a space walk from Gemini 9 lasting 2 hours 15 minutes. He reports beauty and danger, jokes with Stafford, and notes glare of the sun and cold in orbit while attempting the backpack maneuvering experiment.
A small Attala County Methodist church voted to withdraw from the North Mississippi Conference over its Liberal National Council of Churches affiliation. Williamsville Methodist Church, near Kosciusko, plans to join the Association of Independent Methodists.
Registration for a two day summer meeting of the Louisiana Commercial Agriculturalists Association will be at Frey Packing Plant Lafayette starting Thursday at 1 30 p m. W D Curtis secretary treasurer and LSU Cooperative Extension Service economist says the meeting opens at 2 p m Thursday with Claude Ar- cam.
About 50 members from the local High Twelve Clubs are set to attend the 45th annual High Twelve International convention at Roosevelt Hotel New Orleans June 19 to 22. Registration opens 2 p.m. June 19 and the closing banquet is at 7 p.m. June 22. The four day program includes a luncheon by U S Rep Otto E Passman of Monroe a riverboat trip a southern fish fry and a minstrel show followed by a panel workshop and committee reports. Welcoming remarks will come from Gov John J McKeithen New Orleans Mayor Victor H Schiro Grand Master of Masons Peter Bernard Jr and convention chairman Dr Louis Legett.
The Gulf States Section of the Society of American Foresters will hold its annual meeting in New Orleans June 9 and 10 with over 200 foresters from Louisiana Texas and Mississippi attending. A banquet will open the conference and keynote speaker Dr Bruce Graham of Gulf Research Institute will set the theme Meeting the Challenge of an Expanding Forest Industry. Activities include an officers election a plant tour a crayfish packing plant visit near Breaux Bridge and fishing trips in Vermilion Bay.
Gemini 9 with Stafford and Cernan endured multiple setbacks from a fogged helmet visor to garbled communications. An earlier Atlas failure and a stubborn protective shroud on the ATDA forced mission reshuffles and two additional rendezvous tests after launch finally occurred.
About 100 youths aged 10 to 19 gathered at Ray Niswanger Farm near Drew School West Monroe to receive instruction in pig lamb and cattle judging. Niswanger hosted with agriculture experts leading sessions from 10 a.m. to 2 30 p.m. He chairs the West Monroe Chamber of Commerce agriculture committee and was joined by committee members as guides. A noon barbecue honored the Louisiana Junior Black Angus Association members.
Repair crews labored over the weekend to fix Kansas City Southern Railroad tracks 19 miles south of Shreveport Louisiana after a spectacular derailment. Eleven freight cars left the rails and burned for hours. About 200 feet of track and roadbed were ripped up. The train was traveling from Port Arthur Texas to Shreveport. No injuries were reported.
A U S Navy Hercules plane carried Albert Mayfield of Forest City Arkansas to a hospital after a ruptured bladder. With Rear Admiral Bakutis aboard the flight landed at McMurdo Sound beneath fuel drum lights and then departed for Christchurch after over an hour in 40 below zero conditions.
The 50 member International House trade delegation, led by A. L. Jung Jr., reported successful selling on a round the world tour. Immediate business reached $15 million and groundwork for more orders was laid in New Orleans.
President Johnson has been briefed on the Morse panel findings aimed at preventing a July 5 strike by 34,000 workers of five airlines including Eastern National Northwest Trans World and United. The panel’s report, flown to the LBJ Ranch, seeks settlement aids while the five carriers await possible public release.
