Lawmakers debate student loan bill amid clash over exemptions
In Baton Rouge the House Education Committee studied Gov. McKeithen's proposed Louisiana student college loan program. An amendment by Rep. Lawrence Sheridan to remove a repealing clause for fee exemptions passed 8-5, sparking contention as supporters said the bill would upgrade education funding while critics warned it could be unaffordable. The bill envisions a 500000 dollar loan guarantee for fall start, backed by banks and the Louisiana Bankers Association, with loans up to 5000 dollars per student and 90 percent guaranteed by a new state commission. The measure, supported by LSU Alumni Federation and others, aims to provide college access while preserving existing fee exemptions for most lawmakers and staff.
