Jersey Youth Charged With Threatening LBJ

Michael Allen Young, 18, of Wildwood New Jersey, arrested by Secret Service on charges of threatening President Johnson. A letter mailed May 27 from Rio Grande allegedly vowed to “get Johnson like Lee Harvey Oswald got Kennedy.” A .22 rifle and a .32 pistol were found in his bedroom. He claimed no gang ties and recently left Navy service after three weeks.

Nixon backs Scranton as Goldwater running mate

Former Vice President Richard Nixon said Governor William Scranton would be the best vice presidential choice if Barry Goldwater secures the GOP nomination. Nixon praised Scranton's liberal stance as a balance to Goldwater's conservatism and noted geographic balance for a strong ticket. Demonstrations Planned Again In Tuscaloosa

In downtown Tuscaloosa race protests resumed as about 40 youths, mostly Negro teens, were lightly burned by squirts of mustard oil during a prior demonstration. Nine youths were treated at Druid City Hospital. police were not reported treated. Led by the Tuscaloosa Citizens of Action Committee, protests target segregated lunch counters and discriminatory hiring.

Baton Rouge AP reports Gov. John McKeithen appointed R. B. Walden, 63, a long time state official, to lead the state hospital system. The move comes as Walden brings 24 years of service to the post and oversees mental health care.

Operation May Set Pattern For Future

Operation west of Tay Ninh combined U S and Vietnamese special forces in a three day scorched earth mission along the Vaico Oriental River near Cambodia. About 1 000 tons of rice and large quantities of animals were destroyed as the Viet Cong supply network was razed. The plan involved 25 armed and ten troop carrying helicopters with roughly 300 Vietnamese special forces, 200 Rangers and 20 American advisers in a highly coordinated effort aimed at crippling Viet Cong bases and sustenance.
