Atom Device Set Off From Balloon Over Yucca Flat
An Atomic Energy Commission device was fired at 4 46 am from a platform 500 feet above Yucca Flat in the Nevada desert. The Livermore lab conducted 45 experiments including rabbit eye sensitivity tests. Dr Gerald Johnson said the detonation was quite successful from the technical viewpoint. A brief flash and muffled report followed as a small cloud rose to about 6000 feet and drifted north.

Young baseball hopeful killed chasing pop fly
In Vandalia Illinois a 15 year old Pony League player Tommy Greer died after colliding with fellow 15 year old Charles Hershberger while pursuing a pop fly in the opening game. Coroners inquest scheduled. Coach James Spaaf described both as hustling to win and Greer as a natural athlete who gave his all. The collision occurred as Hershberger hit a fast dropping pop fly about 40 feet from home plate. Greer died likely from a snapped spinal cord ruptured heart or ruptured spleen according to Dr Stanley Moore. Neighbors reported no bitterness between families.
