Washington June 5 The emergence of Garner as a possible Democratic candidate prompts New Dealers to adopt a wait and see stance on the president's plans. Garner allies say he will file for the convention next year, with a campaign to win delegates in primaries and conventions. The president’s own intentions remain undisclosed.
Shanghai June 5. Paul V. McNutt, U S high commissioner for the Philippines, told a Shanghai American University Club luncheon that complete independence now would invite servitude and a bloody struggle. He urged not abandoning economic ties as the islands move toward sovereignty under the Tydings McDuffie act.

William E. Tibbs Jr., 26, drowned yesterday in the Mississippi River after falling from the upper deck of the ferry Algiers while crossing to watch a baseball game. He swam several feet toward the Canal Street dock but his body was not recovered.
Sheriff officials report a clue in the assault on J. E. Bennett an AFL organizer and Ollie Logan president of the Texarkana Central Trades and Labor Council. The incident stemmed from Texarkana labor troubles with attackers luring the pair into Caddo parish Louisiana after a trap was set, a witness said. Logan and Bennett had been in Texarkana over a strike at Two States Fruit Package Co. Bud Davis of Rodessa invited them to organize welders from Arkansas and the meeting was planned at an old black church near Rodessa after a chicken supper.
Ben Akin a 24 year old resident of Plain Dealing Bosier parish was shot in the left leg by Deputy Sheriff Will George during a pursuit after an alleged drunken driving arrest near Oil City The deputy fired as Akin fled from the car injuring him in the fleshy part of the leg above the ankle
Senator Ellender Democrat of Louisiana and Senator Reynolds Democrat of North Carolina plan to wear white suits at the Friday capitol reception for the king and queen of England. Ellender said he lacks formal attire and wants to act natural, stating the royals would likely enjoy informal dress.
Prime Minister Chamberlain told the House of Commons that a full public inquiry would examine the Thetis submarine tragedy in which 99 men perished. He described two forward compartments flooding from the torpedo tube, an unable watertight door, and the vessel sinking to 130 feet in Liverpool Bay before surfacing by daylight. The signaling gear failed and communication with escort vessels was lost. The inquiry board personnel were under consideration.
