The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-3 to insert a jury trial provision for federal civil rights cases, a blow to the administration’s bill. The panel also failed 5-5 to strike a section creating a presidential commission to investigate rights violations. Eastland announced the votes after closed-door debate.
Harold Hill of West Monroe was elected district governor of Lions District 8L at the Belmont Motel in Baton Rouge. He will serve as head of the northern Louisiana district comprising 41 clubs to Jonesboro and was also chosen secretary treasurer for the governor's cabinet. Hill and West Monroe members attended the convention and he will join Lions International meetings in San Francisco on June 21.
Sgt. James E. Thornton 25 formerly of Lena Mississippi died after his parachute failed to open during a 2000 foot jump from a private plane at Indiantown Gap. He was assigned to the Indiantown Gap reserve and left a wife and three children in Fayetteville North Carolina. Deputy coroner H W Reed said Thornton flew with an unidentified friend from Fredericksburg airport near Indiantown Gap.

Air Force captain Joe Kittinger soared in a three by eight foot gondola to 96 000 feet, breaking the previous balloon altitude record and reaching a viewable distance of over 300 miles. He remained aloft nearly two hours before descending following radio communication issues.
Lilah Jean Rabun of West Monroe led 224 Louisiana Tech graduates, finishing summa cum laude with a 2.9007 average. She joins Monroe News-Star repertorial staff and held multiple campus leadership roles, as 22 other graduates earned general honors.
The craft stayed aloft six hours and 34 minutes with Joseph Kittinger aboard, who used oxygen and CO2 regeneration systems to breathe at high altitude. The balloon landed in a creek near Weaver, Minnesota, southeast of Minneapolis, without injury. The mission aimed to collect scientific data and perform medical and psychological tests for future rocket flights.
A Baton Rouge AP report says a Senate committee approved the House passed bill 5-0 to stop New Orleans from collecting its one cent sales levy on goods delivered outside the city. The measure advances to the Senate floor for final action.
General Marshall said it was essential to invite Russia to join the Marshall plan in 1947 even if Moscow might try to wreck the program. He argued that mutual cooperation on economic matters should be open to everyone.
The New York Journal American reported that six New York Yankees were fined $1,000 each for a May 16 nightclub brawl. Players named were Hank Sauer Mickey Mantle Billy Martin Yogi Berra Whitey Ford and Johnny Kucks.
Four Baton Rouge men died when a car sped off a curve four miles northwest of Port Allen and struck an 18 inch oak, tearing the vehicle in two. The deceased were George Hall 20 Richard Hallins 19 David Foster 27 and L J Howard 42. Steve B Millican 24 was in critical condition with multiple injuries.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for 149.5 million dollars in supplemental aid for the Post Office Department to prevent substantial mail-service cuts on July 1. The request adds to 3.192 billion already appropriated for the new fiscal year, a figure the White House notes will be insufficient without preserved postal service levels. House and Senate previously trimmed the initial 3.57 billion request by 57.4 million.
The Mississippi Supreme Court dismissed Mrs. Rossie Rodgers Taylor's bid to claim the estate of John Kepler Taylor, a Birmingham lawyer who died in 1952, after records of a 1932 marriage were destroyed in a courthouse fire and evidence favored no marriage. The ruling cites Alabama court findings and lack of common law status, while noting disputed restoration of records and tax records.

A hot el fire at the Pleasant Hotel in Worchester Massachusetts killed three middle aged women and left eight others in serious condition. Dozens were rescued from the fourth and fifth floors as firefighters battled the blaze before dawn.
Joseph King, held in the parish jail on charges of burglary, was tied to two major break ins including Krauss and Cahn Clothing Store on March 28 and Morey’s Jewelry at 129 DeSiard Street on February 5 1955. The jewelry heist yielded 28 rings and three watches. a nightwatchman and passerby described the incident.
The Supreme Court rules 4 2 that Du Pont violates antitrust laws by controlling General Motors through 23 percent stock ownership. Justice Brennan delivered the decision with justices Burton and Frankfurter dissenting. The eight year case began with a Chicago antitrust complaint and followed prior dismissal for lack of proof.
Red River basin waters continued rising in Louisiana with Congressman Overton Brooks urging further flood control, including the Overton Red River waterway. Bayou Pierre runoff added to rising levels while an ARVA check and Red River Valley Association inspection sought flood risk updates. The Denison dam discharge remains high as a crest nears Grand Ecore, signaling ongoing danger for several days.
