Justice Van Devanter Retires From Supreme Court to Farm Life

Washington June 2 Justice Willis Van Devanter ends a 26 year Supreme Court career to become a gentleman farmer. He will spend time on his 788 acre Maryland farm and visit the Seigniory club in Canada. The retirement prompts discussion of a successor to be confirmed by the Senate before the court reconvenes in October.

Ten Face Trial In Albany Kidnapping Case

John Sonny McGlone aged 24 Charles Harrigan 37 and Thomas Dugan 35 have pleaded innocent and remain in county jail since May 3. Other co defendants arrive from Dannemora Howard Strewl Frank Fischer Thomas Burke and Harold Crowley from Chenango county jail Perry Geary and George Carguillo from Massachusetts state prison. McGlone Harrigan and Dugan were moved from Alcatraz last month. Francis Leo Oley and Christopher Miller died in their cells. Edward J and Daniel P O’Connell linked to the July 7 1933 kidnapping of young O’Connell outside his Albany home.

Chance Friendship Ends In Assault In New Orleans

Adrian Carrouche a 26 year old city employee was charged with assault and battery after a chance friendship at a wedding reception led to a sidewalk sparring incident. Einar Oxholm 44 said Carrouche struck him and he lost consciousness on the pavement. Oxholm reported missing 4 cash a $750 diamond ring and a watch and chain worth 75. Detectives Scanlon and Meredith questioned Cartouche and he admitted taking the money and jewelry.

Eight Prisoners Sentenced for Crimes to Angola Prison

Eight prisoners recently sentenced in the district criminal court were moved to Angola state penitentiary under sheriff and deputy escort. The group includes Bob Jones aged 51 with assault with intent to kill. John Henry Crease 22 with manslaughter. Aaron Johnson 22 for forgery. Moses Wright 18 for breaking and entering. Guy Huffty 23. Earl King 17. Clarence Tawwater 17 for breaking and entering. Calvin Lee 33 for larceny and embezzlement.

Youth on trial in slaying of Mary Babcock

In Buffalo on June 2 a 19 year old newsboy Tommy Smith faced trial for the fatal stabbing of 18 year old Mary Ellen Babcock last February. His ill mother was not informed. District Attorney Walter C Newcomb and Marys former friend Helen Mickey Jorge attended the courthouse amid tears.

Trial delayed as grand jury to hear model boy case

A field found Mary’s battered body hours after a knife attack. Opening of another trial was delayed to organize a grand jury for Angelo Guagenti, 19, charged with first degree murder in his 21 year old brother’s shooting last Saturday. Angelo attended the brother’s funeral before being jailed near Tommy’s.
