Absentee Balloting Opens for Aug 19 Primary in Ouachita Parish

Absentee voting begins today for the August 19 Democratic primary with deadlines through Aug 12. Voters may cast ballots in the Ouachita Parish Courthouse basement weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. Friday is the final day to change name address or party affiliation to vote in the primary.

Court Upholds Stay Denying New Board Appeal

The Fifth Circuit denied a stay that would let Monroe’s new six member school board drop its appeal of the at large system ruling. Judge Dawkins had previously ruled the at large plan unconstitutional for diluting black votes, prompting a six member district plan. The decision preserves ongoing litigation as the new board cannot dismiss the appeal and cannot alter major personnel or programs before the case resolves.
