In Winnsboro July 31 J Thompson 57 attacked his wife slashing her throat and burned marshal Taliaferro after a quarrel. The marshal overpowered him with a punch and handcuffed him, sending Thompson to jail as Mrs Thompson remained in serious condition at the hospital.
Jimmie Lee Beans a Leesville inmate serving for assault with intent to kill was killed in a fight at the penitentiary road camp near Franklin ton. Robert White another inmate serving a life term for murder is said to have stabbed Beans with a cane knife. White is held in Washington parish jail awaiting prosecution. James Cooper sustained a minor stab wound.
Associated Press reports European authorities moved to curb planned communist antiwar demonstrations across capitals. Paris and Berlin prepared large police presences, Vienna banned gatherings, Warsaw authorities arrested many communists, and China's Shanghai French concession saw mass arrests ahead of August actions.
Miss Mabel Nelson an employee at the paper bag plant in Hodge was stabbed by fellow worker Belle Walker last night. Her condition improved slightly today with a slim chance of recovery after stab wounds to the back and breast.

Richard Joshua Reynolds of Winston Salem North Carolina was found guilty of manslaughter in an accident that killed motorcyclist Arthur Graham on the Bath road near London last May. He received five months in prison and was ordered to pay all costs of the prosecution, with Reynolds also providing for Graham’s widow for life. Judge Humphreys stressed no distinction between native and foreigner in justice.
After five days and 99 examinations a jury was picked to try Dr James H Snook for the hammer slaying of his student paramour Theora Hix at Ohio State University The defense sought to challenge the array but the court denied and the panel was dismissed for the afternoon The judge noted daily noon examinations affirm the defendant’s fitness to proceed
New Orleans July 31 street cars of the Desire line were hit by bricks during the early run. Cars 668 and 664 were targeted at Dauphine and Desire streets with no injuries or arrests. Police on the France and Dauphine corner reported no bricks observed.
Graf Zeppelin, the giant German dirigible, is prepared in Friedrichshafen for departure at dawn to Lakehurst New Jersey on its second westward crossing. The ship carries passengers including Americans and cargo as it readsied for a four day flight over 4000 miles with stops in Friedrichshafen Tokyo and Los Angeles on the return world route.

Secretary Arthur M. Hyde said the MecNary Haugen bill is dead and that farmer cooperative organizations offer the real cure for agricultural ills. He argued six million farmers should form commodity groups to control the market and oppose reliance on debentures and federal aid, and he favored national cooperative associations similar to business models.

Herbert MacDonald Stuart 29, private detective agency employee, admitted after hours of questioning that writing and jealousy over a nickname plus a quarrel over curtain shed access led him to shoot Charles Christofferson 43, a dock patrolman, on the New Orleans wharf. He said he fired to disable Christofferson.
In Chicago on July 31 James Shupe died from a bullet wound after a shooting in the West Madison street badlands. Thomas McNichols 37 a municipal court bailiff was gravely wounded alongside George Riggins 29 a known gambler and gang associate. Police term the incident a possible beer war renewal and note Shupe had beer trade ties.

The injured include Thomas McNichols a 37 year old municipal court bailiff and son of a former state representative James Bozo Shape a 35 year old minor beer peddler and former convict and brother of Tommy Shape imprisoned for the $80 000 International Harvester payroll robbery incident George Riggins named as a minor gangster and gambler.
The radio commission filed its answer to KVOO Tulsa Oklahoma appeal seeking use of the frequency then held by KWKH Shreveport Louisiana. Attorneys for KVOO indicated a possible withdrawal of the appeal and awaited owner instructions.
St Louis fliers Red Jackson and Forest O Brine completed a 420 hour 21 minute flight at Lambert field to attend funeral services for George Lea Lambert. A crowd of about 25000 broke police lines to view the Robin as it was towed to its hangar after a rain soaked arrival.
