Prime Minister Stalin and Soviet officials observed Aviation Day displays at Tushino Airport while Western diplomats from the United States Britain and France declined invitations in protest over posters depicting Soviet planes pursuing American craft. The U S Ambassador Kennan confirmed objections to the posters as the event proceeded.
Henry Clay of Shreveport was elected commander of the Louisiana department of the American Legion at the 34th annual convention in New Orleans. Clay, KWKH general manager, is son in law of the late John Ewing and succeeded by W Y Cuney and Louis Dawson as vice commanders.
Hugh W. Davis, 67, of 2814 Gordon Avenue, died at his residence after months of illness. He led the Davis Lawhead funeral firm as senior member and had retired due to health. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 4 30 p.m. at Hixson Brothers with Rev J T Horton officiating and burial in Riverview Park. He was born June 22 in Union Parish and lived and worked in El Dorado and Monroe before oil industry ties.
Dudley LeBlanc files aggravated assault charges against Louisiana Public Service Commission Chairman Wade Martin Sr. after LeBlanc says Martin slapped him at a Kaplan campaign rally. Martin, 70, says he punched in response to a threat, bond set at 100 dollars. The dispute coincides with campaigns for the Third and First District seats as candidates seek general election bids.
In Buenos Aires a crowd of thousands gathered at the Ministry of Labor to view Eva Peron’s body. Eight people died and many more were injured from trampling and fainting as troops aided police and medical staff.
The City of Monroe inaugurated its newly elected leaders Monday at 10 a.m. Oua chita parish clerk of court R. Dean Farr administered the oath to Mayor John E. Coon, Commissioner of Finance and Utilities Frank X. Cline, and Commissioner of Streets and Parks Wayne Huckaby. Rev. E. F. Hayward of Grace Episcopal Church delivered the prayer.
Mustapha El Nahas Pasha, leader of Egypt's Wafd party, voiced strong support for Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib Bey after ousting King Farouk. Nahas called Naguib savior of the country and pledged party backing for his new premier Aly Maher Pasha. Naguib warned against demonstrations and foreign interference as Cairo returns to power.
Miss Mary Evelyn Dickerson, executive vice president of the Ouachita Parish Industrial Development Committee, Inc., announced Monday that the local real estate board will fully cooperate to ensure complete and decisive backing for industrial site listings.
Herman Sims aged 37 of 100 South First Street West Monroe is jailed on an armed robbery warrant sworn by his father in law Henry Tarver. The incident allegedly occurred Saturday when Sims allegedly used a knife to force Tarver to give $5 and then drive to Ruston before Tarver and Mrs. Sims alerted authorities.
Brigadier General E L Eaton announces Selman Field Monroe Louisiana will reuse existing structures including the theater post exchange and barracks while runways are reallocated as taxiways and ramps. Hangars become maintenance shops and a new heavy bomber runway may be built with safety measures guiding air traffic. A rough saving of 5 83 million dollars is anticipated from reactivation.
Radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB tracked four to twelve unidentified objects in six hours. Jet fighters pursued but the objects vanished, with a pilot reporting four distant lights and later a steady white light that disappeared. Officials avoided using the term flying saucers.

After filing, entrants take a written safety exam and then an actual driving test. Those with traffic violations in the past six months are ineligible.
In Bridgeport Washington a man, Matthias Swearson 27, killed his wife Joyce 25 and their four children as they prepared for Sunday services. He admitted the slayings saying the minister told him God is a square shooter. He was arrested and police reported the bloody scene remained at the modest family home.
Monroe officials attended the Jaycees weekly meeting to discuss city improvements. Mayor John E. Coon and Commissioner Frank X. Cline were reelected, while Wayne Huckaby defeated John P. Simmons in the first primary for Streets and Parks.
The final test of the Twin Cities Safety campaign will be given at 8 o clock tonight at the Monroe News-Star-World offices. All weekly Safety Drivers named by the Phantom Drivers are eligible to take it. The top scorer wins an all expense paid Nassau trip via Delta Airlines. Announcement of the winner will appear in the Monroe Morning World on Sunday August 3.
