A light or non paralytic polio case and a suspected case were reported to Dr. W Carroll Summer. L M Brown Jr four West Monroe treated for a light polio and returned home. A suspected case at Conway Memorial Hospital involving Dwain Smith of Selmanfield was sent to the polio center in Alexandria. Brown child is the 14th polio case in Ouachita parish this year.
Retired Major General Claire Chennault told more than 1,000 Legionnaires at the Monroe Recreation Center that the United States faces danger from within and without. He warned against power seekers and graft, crime and corruption, calling communism a major external threat. The session opened the 34th annual convention with memorials and honors for Korea War casualty Corporal Billy Reddick, presented by Chennault and Rev. E. D. Holloway.
Corporal Billy F. Reddick 19 died in Korea last October honored at the American Legion state convention in Monroe. Maj Gen Claire L. Chennault presented the Distinguished Service Cross to Reddick posthumously to his father Grady P. Reddick with Major Henry A. Coenen in attendance.
Mississippi's 18 votes supported Virginia, South Carolina and Louisiana in seating bids without loyalty pledges. Virginia was seated after a tense vote, Louisiana and South Carolina faced adjournment before decisions. Mississippi's stance echoed its own non signing, with Louisiana citing state law limits.
A 1950 state appropriation to build a $300000 gymnasium at Northeast Louisiana State College has been released. College officials may use the funds for any capital outlay. The diversion was enabled by last session legislation, with Rep. Shady Wall praised for passage of the act amendment.
In Varnado Louisiana the conflict over town council elections ends as M V Lunn gubernatorial aide declares no election will be held to fill town offices. The existing council was appointed by Gov Kennon and sworn in last Wednesday. A prior plan to hold an August 26 vote to name a second council is canceled. A mayor and alderman dispute escalated to a knife assault with Mayor Tom Williams charged with aggravated assault against E L Fornea.
Washington reports that John R. Steelman approved a half billion dollar steel price increase, 5.20 per ton for carbon steel and 5.65 average for all steels, aligning with a March proposal by Charles E. Wilson though President Truman had rejected that earlier offer.
The three week news blackout on Korean armistice talks ended as the United Nations and Communists remained deadlocked over prisoner exchanges. Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison Jr. said 18 off the record meetings since July 4 were fruitless but hope persists with open sessions. The UN refused to force prisoner returns. only 83,000 of 170,000 Allied POWs want repatriation, while the Communists demand 116,000 Chinese captives.
At the Chicago convention Adlai E. Stevenson faced pressure as CIO urged delegates to back him after honoring other promises. The move threatened Estes Kefauver and Averell Harriman as candidates while Barkley’s name remained in play. Demonstrations aimed to position Stevenson for the nomination amid rival blocs from AFL and CIO.
