Legion Convention Defeats Race Ban On 40 & 8 Link
In Indianapolis delegates at the American Legion state convention overwhelmingly rejected a bid to sever ties with the white 40 & 8 order. A Negro legionnaire vowed to picket future events while a white delegate called the move un American, as the group debated membership restrictions. Meanwhile in Moscow a former NSA employee Viktor Norris Hamilton defected to the Soviet Union, alleging U.S. intelligence harmed Middle East peace and detailing cryptography and intelligence work at NSA posts in Washington and Ft. Meade. Hamilton, born Hindali, claimed to be a naturalized American citizen married to Lilly Bell Drake, with ties to the Near East intelligence unit. The 40 & 8, whose constitution restricts to white males, faced opposition from other veterans groups and the Ohio convention urged ending race-based membership. Indianapolis remains the national headquarters of the Legion.

Two Illinois Men Killed In Collision
Two 19 year old Illinois men died when their 1957 Ford crashed head on into an oil tank truck on U S Highway 79 inside Homer. Driver Guy Hammonds of Arcola and passenger Allen Matheny of Oblong were killed. Truck driver Daniel McIntyre of El Dorado escaped injury as his vehicle burned but he avoided the flames. The crash is Homer’s first fatal auto wreck in about three years.
