A startling report describes thirty five Black individuals confined in a decrepit wooden prison cage marked by harsh conditions. The piece emphasizes dehumanizing treatment and calls for scrutiny of the authorities responsible.
In Jackson Mississippi on July 22 a wooden prison cage on the second floor housed 35 negro inmates who were burned to death when a fire started under the stairway cutting off the only escape. The first floor stored hay grain and molasses. Two guards heard screams but could not free the men.

Arkansas voters head to the polls to elect a governor to succeed J M Futrell whose resignation created a vacancy. Democratic candidate Judge George W Hays is favored over Republican Harry H Myers and Progressive George W Murphy. The state will crown its fifth governor in 1913 due to lack of a lieutenant governor and senate president serving temporarily.
The session of the legislature debated electing a lieutenant governor alongside the governor to avoid this year's complications. M. Goldman of Boston plans spring footwear orders for Boston Store after trips to Brockton Haverhill and other centers then returns to New York for a month with his mother and winter goods. E S Harper reports travel through Missouri and Kansas saying there is no place like Louisiana noting poor corn yields but good wheat crops. Joe K Walker Texas Pacific Railway agent based in Shreveport visited the city today.
The State health train led by Dr Oscar Dowling stops in Monroe tomorrow at 2 25 pm and stays until Thursday. Exhibits educational in nature welcome public visits all day and evening near the V S P passenger station. A motion picture outfit offers a free show in the school auditorium or post office square. Dowling and assistants will conduct inspections while here.
Baton Rouge July 22 The State Board of Equalization considers raising timber land valuations, likely boosting 1915 rolls. Parish and city assessments would rise under front foot method adopted by Shreveport and others, with Vernon Parish potentially adding nearly two million. Union Sulphur mines worth 12.5 million join the rolls, and railroad assessment gains of about ten million further lift totals.
