Baton Rouge, July 19. Louisiana's state board of education plans a statement on the removal of President Claybrook Cottingham of Louisiana Tech. The action followed a request from a Southern Association representative. The board also discussed distribution of the state equalization fund and noted pay disparities between white and Negro teachers in equalized districts.
A wind fueled fire in Heppner Oregon last night destroyed two grain elevators a flour mill and two large warehouses along with eight railroad boxcars and two lumber and coal sheds. About 380000 bushels of wheat were burned. Fire Chief Charles Ruggles said the blaze started at the top of the largest county elevator possibly from an electric short circuit and spread to nearby yards.
Santa Fe New Mexico July 19. H Tracy Snelling missing since last Wednesday. Los Alamos AEC information chief, 37, last seen at La Fonda Hotel bar. Hotel Fisher El Paso clerk says he checked in Thursday and out Saturday with Albert Bourland. They asked about Phoenix train schedules before leaving. Police and federal agents search. Snelling to lead reporters to desert blast site.
Armored troops fought for control of Guatemala's national palace after the assassination of army chief Col Francisco Javier Arana. War planes, armed civilians, and a government curfew filled a city in confusion as Arevalo's regime claimed control and a potential military junta was discussed. Ambiguity persisted about who attacked whom and casualties remained unconfirmed.
John George Haigh, 39, self confessed vampire slayer, was condemned to death by gallows after a 15 minute jury verdict for the murder of Mrs Olive Durand Deacon on February 18. He admitted dissolving the body in acid and drinking her blood, seeking a verdict of guilty but insane.
In the French Quarter a 25 year old mother was shot in a candy store by 18 year old Harold Louis Perez who then fatally shot himself. Perez died shortly after and the coroner ruled the death a suicide. A note in his pocket apologized and cited possessiveness over Mrs. Myers. The Myers children are Reggie and Ronnie.

Washington reports leading opponents of the North Atlantic treaty join in a last minute bid to insert a no arms commitment into the pact. Taft and Watkins back a revised reservation to be voted Thursday, arguing article three does not obligate arms supplies. Senate leaders claim sufficient votes to defeat reservations and a broader plan to aid pact allies at 1.13 billion dollars was outlined for later congress consideration. The ratification vote is set for 4 p.m. Thursday.
Alexandria Louisiana July 19. Eight State Colony and Training School inmates employed in private homes have been recalled. Women inmates earn 15 dollars monthly and men 25. Patients receive 5 and the remainder is sent to the colony in patients names with accounts kept. One employer was 500 dollars behind.

He was 59 and had served on the high court since 1940 after a remarkable career as governor general of the Philippines U S attorney general and Democratic governor of Michigan His public career included pivotal roles in sit down strikes and reform the fire of his work reflected a devout faith in democracy and law.
A coalition of Democrats and Republicans rejected admin istration compromise on farm legislation. House speakers argued over a two-year three-crop Brannan subsidy trial while Gore urged a continued program and Cooley predicted passage of the administration bill with limited trials.
New Orleans officials report that billionaire oilman William T Burton of Lake Charles and two others were upheld by the U S Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on conspiracy to influence a jury. They were sentenced May 24 1948 to two years in prison and $10000 fines.
In London s east end a violent race riot left two Negro men severely injured and three officers slightly hurt. Eight white men and eight Negroes were arrested on assault and insulting behavior charges as police restored order after more than 100 officers were deployed to a Deptford lodginghouse district. Eyewitnesses blamed the conflict on perceived provocation and a dispute between residents and Nigerian laborers amid unemployment.
