In Prague and across Czechoslovakia Catholic priests defy government orders to abandon Archbishop Beran and the Vatican. A mass read a resolution pledging loyalty to church authorities, denouncing government Catholic action as schismatic and claiming signatures were coerced.
In remarks from New York dated July 18, the author argues Judge Kaufman limited cross examination to shield alleged communist links in the government and to protect Felix Frankfurter. The piece criticizes Frankfurter for evasive testimony and hints at his influence over government appointments.
Frank Bates a 42 year old Black man charged with murder in the slaying of Rev John F Neifert at Holy Redeemer Church died in parish prison last night. An inquest ruled death a heart attack though cellmates said Bates prayed at 11 PM then slept and mumbling in sleep at 2:40 AM. Bates had been indicted by the Orleans Parish grand jury for killing the priest after mass and leading officers to his home where the priest’s wallet with $14 was found. The priest served in multiple parishes across Detroit Dallas New Orleans Wilmington Mobile and other locations before a six week assignment in Mobile.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approves a 300 million dollar yearly pay increase for the unified military. Boosts range from 3 percent for lower enlisted to 37 percent for brigadier generals, with passage likely blocked without offset savings linked to the pending unification bill.
The 1949 auto show opens at 8 o clock along DeSiard street with displays from 14 Monroe agencies. Police will direct traffic until 9 30 p m and a new car will be given away in front of the courthouse on St John street.
Washington reports Monroe will receive top priority for two public housing projects totaling 126 low rent units if the city renews its 1940 application. The federal housing authority notes many projects nationwide were halted after June 1940 as the nation redirected building toward war use. Louisiana had 1764 units contracted in June 1940. The Kansas Supreme Court suspended Vernon C. Axton as Parsons mayor pending a Supreme Court suit by Attorney General Harold Fatzer. Fatzer accuses Axton of tolerating gambling and illegal liquor sales and of reappointing police chief Frank Williams despite extortion concerns. Williams was dismissed July 7 at Fatzer's urging.
Breaux Bridge Louisiana works around a collapsed 51 year old span after a bayou accident. The old bridge sank last Tuesday during an attempt to open for a passing boat. Trucks cars trains and pedestrians use the railroad bridge under a new traffic light, halving the town's connection but avoiding injuries.
Ouachita parish authorities report three men jailed in two weeks for indecent advances toward juveniles in West Monroe and suburbs. One man found guilty received nine months. another freed on 1500 dollar bond. a third held on indecency charges as prosecutors cite parental cooperation and juvenile court secrecy.
Paxton Stephens a Coushatta businessman and former quartermaster officer was voted commander of the Louisiana American Legion at the state convention. He won unopposed as the four day gathering closed. The group rejected a World War I veteran state bonus and backed restoring a civil service merit system with extra for disabled veterans. Other officers named include J E Knight Roy Reed and more.
President Truman taps John R. Steelman to direct federal spending to job-rich areas. Steelman, 49, will coordinate across 20 departments as acting chairman of the National Security Resources Board. Commerce and Labor survey where aid is most needed, then funnel purchases to the needy regions.
Washington reports an army contract handling probe leading to the suspension of Maj. Gen. Herman Feldman and Alden H Waitt. A Senate inquiry and Rep. Shafer demand White House aide Maj. Gen. Harry Vaughan be sidelined amid allegations of improper conduct.
Washington: A three member fact finding board will begin public hearings July 28 in New York to probe postwar wage and pension demands in the steel industry. The panel, chaired by Dr. Carroll R. Daugherty, will meet earlier to arrange procedural matters with steel industry and United Steelworkers representatives.
Principal Jack Hayes resigns effective July 31 1949 after requesting a two week paid vacation for sinus treatment. He and wife plan to move to Corydon Kentucky. Hayes born December 13 1882 in Smithville Tennessee, educated at Peabody College, led the school since 1908 expanding from 62 students to an average graduating class over 300. He has been active in Monroe civic life including Kiwanis membership.
Four year old Norman Richard Kalil dies after a Sunday afternoon car crash ten miles west of Monroe on U S Highway 80. His father Isaac Kalil escapes injury but Roy Sullivan faces state police inquiry after his Ford sedan collided head on with the Kalil Hudson. The boy had just recovered from an appendectomy and was in the Wright Bendel clinic with his mother Mary Ann Kalil and grandfather Forage Kalil among the injured passengers.
Baxter Porter Rawls aged 17 of Darnell died in a Monroe hospital after a diving accident in Boeuf river fractured his neck during a dive into a shallow area. He died Sunday after being rushed to hospital. Funeral held Monday at Bayou Macon Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survived by parents C V Rawls and two sisters Francis Lester and Barbara Rawls. Pallbearers named Bob Billings Paul Hatfield Robert Hatfield Thomas Jones Paul McMillan William McMillan.
A three day search failed to locate H Tracy Snelling 37 missing since last Wednesday from Los Alamos New Mexico He was information chief at the AEC lab and was last seen in Santa Fe after asking for annual leave The AEC administration requested news of his whereabouts and Mrs Snelling planned a picnic with him that afternoon
Bombs exploded in Barcelona injuring nine people in the Plaza de Catalona area and damaging windows near the square. A second smaller bomb in a garden near Pedralbes palace caused no injuries while two large time bombs at the city’s largest hotel were removed before causing damage. Police launched a dragnet to catch those responsible.
