Community groups rally around Assessment 10 as pressure mounts on the Equalization Board. Advocates argue higher funding is needed for regional services, while opponents warn of higher costs for taxpayers and businesses.
Baton Rouge July 19 The State Board of Equalization hears requests for timber assessment increases from Vernon parish and new parishes carved from Calcasieu. Vernon seeks about 2 000 000 extra value with proposed class by class raises and timber rights, backed by recent land sales as proof. Delegations from Vernon and Beauregard present prior to the board vote.
The Beauregard delegation led by Mr. Heard urged equal assessment rates with Vernon. He presented evidence including timber lands transfer correspondence and police jury resolutions opposing the proposed increase in Beauregard timber lands.
S A Johnson, jailed in Vicksburg, admits killing Elston Brewer after a quarrel aboard a houseboat. He describes striking Brewer with an ax, weighing the body with a stone to hide the crime in the canal. Brewer, 25, son of Cave City Bank president G W Brewer, was traveling for health.
Washington July 19 The Federal Board of Mediation met to organize and address an eastern railroad labor dispute. Assistant Secretary Post, named as commissioner, was legally barred from membership, but the president can appoint another member. The board plans to formally take up the case.
Seattle reports last nights riot near Socialist and Industrial Workers of the World HQs. Sailors mingled with rioters but none were arrested by police. the Provost Guard aboard the West Virginia rounded up several on deck. Socialists claim 1800 dollars in damages and Industrial Workers 1000.
A man who confessed to killing a friend in the case tied to the Brewer murder says he will plead guilty. Authorities report the suspect admitted involvement and indicated a guilty plea is forthcoming.
The Monroe News-Star has relocated to a new two story brick building in Monroe Louisiana. The first issue in the new building was printed on a Goss Comet Web press. The Town Talk reports the plant is well lit ventilated and efficient with editorial rooms on the second floor over the business office. The press room and mechanical department occupy the first and second floors connected by stairs and an elevator. The paper is praised as a booster for North Louisiana and its home town and aims to weather any storm with truthfulness and square dealing.

Morgan Whitney a heavy stockholder in Whitney Iron Works the Morgan Louisiana and Texas Railroad and Steamship Company and a director in Whitney Central National Bank died at his home here this morning after a three day illness. Death was attributed to a nervous affliction.

Baton Rouge July 19 slander charges against W R Dodson J B Bruner and Halligan were waived arraignment and set for trial next week two Bruner informations for July 22 one for Halligan July 22 and another Halligan July 24 defense objected to early assignment citing book review need.
The court heard that Dr. Dodson padded his accounts and filed a false report to the General Assembly. Justin Daspit and Rob Milling, both from New Orleans, were present in court to assist the district attorney. Milling will attend for the case opening, while Amos J. Ponder of Tangipahoa aids the defense.
Next Tuesday July 22 the new St Francis Sanitarium will be solemnly dedicated with Catholic rites. Bishop C Vandegaer of the Alexandria diocese will officiate blessing the main building and interior fixtures. Tickets for limited seating are required and may be obtained at the Catholic rectory.
