Phoenix jury convicts Robert Burgunder 22 of killing Jack Peterson and sentences him to death. His mother Ruth Burgunder reacts with shock as defense contends mental unbalance and appeals for new trial.
San Francisco July 18 Harper Knowles and Stanley Morton Doyle were added to the list of witnesses summoned by Bridges defense in the Harry Bridges deportation hearing. Knowles testified before the Dies committee last fall that many well known Californians were Communist sympathizers. The defense seeks to show improper inducements used to procure witnesses and argues Bridges is not a deportable alien Communist.
In Portsmouth New Hampshire on July 18 the disabled submarine Squalus was found resting on the bottom on an almost even keel after a diver descended for the first time since it tore from its lifting pontoons last Thursday. The craft had only a slight list to port but tangled lines prevented full inspection amid very poor visibility.
The Missouri Pacific railroad will invest 90000 to upgrade a two mile Monroe to Riverton segment with 32 color light signals. Thirty five signal crewmen under PM Gault and L S Werthmuller will work days to complete a 313 mile automatic block signal chain from Collinston to New Orleans. The goal is faster, safer traffic and removal of mixed territory operating rules.
A large shopper turnout is expected for Dollar Day, the summer sales event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce merchants division. Secretary Morgenthau lauded the $2.39 billion lending bill as a real advance toward aligning government expenditures with receipts. He testified before the Senate Banking Committee that self liquidating loans could replace non recoverable outlays, with interest and amortization paid from investment earnings. He urged immediate action and outlined provisions allocating funds for highways, municipal loans, and leasing over several years.
Acting president Paul M. Hebert told a faculty and staff meeting that LSU’s academic standing remains intact after a financial scandal. Hebert stated activities will continue and the budget will be carried out with only minor adjustments, maintaining LSU as a strong institution.
Federal indictments in Louisiana prompt arraignments set for next Monday before Judge Wayne G. Borah. Seymour Weiss, indicted dock board president, released on bond, fled to New York. The Fearless Democrats form to curb corruption, with Governor Long meeting officials.
Baton Rouge July 18 Five members of the Louisiana State University board were urged to resign as a grand jury probes ex President James Monroe Smith amid embezzlement charges. Tom Dutton leader of the LSU Alumni Association called for the resignations from Pratt Ellison Hoffpauir Fournet and Peltier citing an impartial roots inquiry.
Chinese riflemen shot down a Japanese naval bomber on a Hankow to Shanghai flight. Bad weather forced the plane to a low altitude where Chinese bullets hit it and it crashed near Laozhushan in Hupeh province killing 12 aboard including Major General Tomochi Toji.
An extraordinary White House conference chaired by Senate leaders discussed reviving the neutrality bill this session. President Roosevelt, Secretary Hull, Senate Majority Leader Barkley, Pittman, and three Republicans including McNary, Borah, and Austin attended or were invited as talks centered on discharging the Foreign Relations Committee, attaching the bill to another measure, or winning a committee member to the administration position. Barkley stressed continued hope and urged Republican cooperation.
Ten year old Robert Robb stepped on tracks while retrieving a bathing suit and was run over by a double header freight. He survived with a probable right thigh fracture and cuts, after being rushed to a hospital. Fire damaged the Pittsburgh joint stock yards in an eight alarm blaze causing about $100000 in damage.
The Japanese freighter Bokuyo Maru sank 1,125 miles east of Yokohama after sending five minute SOS calls. 209 of 212 aboard were rescued, with the fire likely starting in nitrates loaded at Valparaiso. Four ships were ordered to assist by NYK line officials.

Polly Weil 18 from upstate New York admitted guilt to a kidnapping charge in San Francisco and was held at the city jail awaiting probation report due August 10. She had taken 8 year old Krehe Osborn from a home where she worked as governess on June 7 demanding 1600 dollars. the child was found unharmed 27 hours later in San Jose.
In Manchukuo the border fighting between Soviet Mongolian and Japanese Manchoukuoan forces grew tense. Officials called the situation extremely serious as talks stalled over a protest against Soviet air raids near FuruFuji, 400 miles from the Outer Mongolian border.
Miss Katherine Smith 18, daughter of Mr and Mrs J Arthur Smith, LSU student, lies critically injured in a Donaldsonville hospital after a Grand Isle outing car crash with an ice truck. Her escort, the driver, is also badly hurt. a rear-seat passenger escapes unharmed. Family stays at bedside Tuesday.
Corrigan and his bride were to fly from Corpus Christi to Aransas Pass on a honeymoon trip. They wed on the first anniversary of Corrigan’s famed transatlantic solo flight. Mrs. Corrigan is Elizabeth Marvin of San Antonio.
Governor Earl K. Long announced L P Abernathy resigns as chairman of the Louisiana Highway Commission after stepping down from the LSU board. Dr Lether E Frazar, president of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, is named to succeed Abernathy. Frazar takes oath and is described as young and vigorous with broad educational ties.
The Monroe conservation office will open its oil and gas records to the public. W D Dark says Governor Earl K Long ordered the records to be accessible as they were formerly, following a press letter dated July 13 1939 from Baton Rouge.
