London July 7 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famed novelist and public figure died today at age unknown. The writer of Sherlock Holmes is described as confident in a spirit world to the end and hoped to communicate with his family after death.
Adrian Conan Doyle says his father the novelist and spiritualist will continue to communicate after death. He notes family belief, warns of impersonators, and cites telltale speech patterns as proof of his father’s genuine messages from the spirit world.
A report notes that Sir Arthur has been listed with heart disease as of January 4 of this year. The article continues on page three.
The Goodyear zeppelin entry from Akron piloted by R J Blair with F A Trotter as aide won the national elimination balloon race starting in Houston. They landed at Greensburg Kentucky about 850 miles from Houston, outdistancing 14 other contestants. All landed safely. The Detroit Times bag and United Van Service entry from Cleveland contended for second, with Detroit aeronauts appearing to win the close finish.
Judge Renfro Turner of Marion Arkansas prepared to issue a writ ordering the Harahan bridge between Memphis Tennessee and Arkansas opened toll free Thursday. The move ends a long dispute with the Arkansas state highway department over toll collection with citizens claiming excess charges and expecting the department to appeal.
President Hoover urged speedy ratification of the London naval treaty in a special message to Congress. He warned failure would reverse peace progress and fuel naval arms races and suspicion. He cited three years of Geneva talks, long public discussion, and opposition by a minority in the Senate.
In Bastrop on July 7 Special to The News Star Ellis Hayden charged with poisoning his wife began trial proceedings in district court. Six jurors were selected for Hayden with more talesmen summoned as the courtroom filled. Both sides vetted jurors to avoid preformed opinions while John Durham 25 stands charged in a separate slaying near Jones.
Special to The News Star reports Caldwell parish investigators cannot identify the man whose body was found in woods near Boeuf river, 12 miles east of Columbia. He is believed to have died about ten days earlier, killed and moved there by automobile. A blood stained cap was found near the body.
Police, deputy sheriffs and state troopers blocked a planned picket at the Fisher Body plant in Flint Michigan as about a thousand workers returned to duty. Strikers had planned a parade with signs after rejecting a compromise wage offer tied to the 1929 scale that did not recognize the Automobile Workers association.
In Warren Arkansas the charred bodies of J R Barnett 65 and his wife 60 were found in their home destroyed by fire. A son Albert 30 was taken into custody to determine if the couple were slain. Probing continues as investigators assess the cause.
The city hosts a large Alabama National Guardsmen contingent at Camp Beauregard with about 1500 khaki-clad trainees. Mayor Walmsley of New Orleans and Colonel Meyers join Brigadier General Fleming and others in reviewing and addressing the troops. Representative Aswell and Brig. General Fiske are also slated to visit and inspect.
Police quelled a general fight on North Rampart street stemming from a minor auto wreck. Three men were arrested William Stander Edward Morse and Joseph Triay. Revolvers gleamed but no shots were fired. One officer left with a black eye.
The Louisiana supreme court ended a district court injunction that had tied up state highway funds for New Orleans debt collection of 246 532 dollars on the Claiborne avenue paying fund. The court ordered the state highway commission to deposit 246 532 dollars with interest in Baton Rouge court pending liquidation. Testimony was heard from three sides before the high court under citation.
Associated Press reports the three day Fourth of July weekend claimed 404 lives across the nation. Fireworks and toy pistols caused 29 deaths, autos 178, drownings 121, and other causes including heat and heart issues 76. Chicago saw unprecedented beach congestion as 700,000 people crowded beaches and seawalls.
John W. Meehan aged 64 former commander of Leonidas Barkdull Faulk post No. 13 American Legion died after a long illness at his home 511 Louisville avenue. He resigned as chief dispatcher of the Illinois Central railroad after months of illness and had held many railroad posts over more than 40 years. Meehan was a native of Mauch Chunk Pennsylvania and began in railroading at age 18.
Walter Dokes, a Negro fugitive, was arrested by Police Sergeant F S Pettit and Officers L G Parker and J M Busby in Concrete quarters off Congo street. He had escaped from Camp B June 26 and had been sentenced to 20 to 60 years for assault by shooting and multiple burglaries.
The standing senate committee investigating the state penitentiary will present its findings to the upper house tonight after more than two weeks of hearings at the Angola prison farm. Chairman Wingate leads the panel with members Norwood Holcombe Whittington Schwing Caffery LaRance Knott Redmond Labbe and Johnson.
Tuscaloosa Alabama July 7 Tom and Ollie Robinson two of the negroes wanted for murder in connection with the slaying of Grover C Boyd Friday at Emelle Alabama during the race riots there in which six persons lost their lives were in Tuscaloosa last night. The two negroes visited their sister here and left for Birmingham it is understood. The negro woman admitted having seen them here yesterday. The two negroes bought food from a grocer here and his description of them tallied exactly with descriptions sent here from Emelle.
James Flori a Philadelphia gangster was executed in the electric chair at Rockview penitentiary for the murder of Pasquale Livey committed on April 24, 1929. He was 25 and known as Dapper Jimmy. Guards strapped him in at 7:01 am and a single contact at 7:02 ended his life.
Rosedale Mississippi July 7 Preparations are under way to entertain the flood control committee headed by Congressman Reid from Illinois. The delegation will tour Tallulah Rayville Lake Village and other Louisiana towns before entering the Mississippi Delta and visiting Dermott McGehee Pine Bluff and Bolivar and Washington counties in Mississippi.
Officials in North Little Rock investigated whether Anna Raczkowski aged 21 drowned accidentally or killed herself after her body was found in the Arkansas River. She disappeared Friday night, with authorities continuing to search for answers.
Acting Mayor J Allen Couch freed 268 prisoners on Independence Day. about 60 repair workers returned to duty as police plan rearrests to resume large scale work by Thursday. Couch faces graft probe critics while Mayor Ragsdale was in New York welcoming Bobby Jones.
Baton Rouge July 7 with four days left in the 1930 Louisiana legislature lawmakers return to the capital to argue major issues including Governor Long backed constitutional convention bill for 68 million highway and bridge bonds in the senate and Wim berly grocery sales tax in the house a possible extra session is debated though Long says it is highly improbable and expects passage of the convention bill before Thursday with the senate to act on committee amendments before sending the bill to the legislative bureau for corrections
James E. Boyd a dairyman living near Little Rock was arrested and charged with the slaying of his uncle Clyde L. Boyd age 50, following a bitter quarrel over cattle that led to a knife attack near here yesterday.
Chicago Daily News crime reporter Jery T Leland Reese says his car was forced off a DeKalb road by another vehicle after a Friday night warning of violence. Reese, Ed Braun, and Allen Finlay were bruised in Glidden Memorial Hospital. Braun and Finlay had broken ribs.
