British and French troops report success along the Somme from the river to Belloy with operations north of the river near Clergy and Sormon. Baltimore July 6 Attendance at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks national convention and reunion is expected to exceed the prior high. Hotels and boarding houses report near full occupation as preparations begin for the event next week.
Visitors are expected to number around 100000 as cities nationwide send their quota of the Best People on Earth. Work on decorating the city is underway and by Saturday night the business district should rival Solomon in splendor. The Court of Honor on Fay ette street will host the reviewing stand for the parade. The convention’s business sessions begin Tuesday and the parade occurs Wednesday with numerous entertainments for delegates and their ladies.
London reports the Board of Control decreed that after July 1 spirits may not be sold unless proven bottled before June 6 and at 25 degrees under proof. Prices rise to $1.25 per bottle while pre war costs were 7 cents. Consumers get about four cents worth of whiskey for 31 cents of water per half pint. Despite restrictions, consumption rose by three million gallons in a year as drinkers dilute more and drink faster.
San Francisco July 5 The Southern Pacific has announced a 25 cent per day wage increase for all section hands in California Nevada New Mexico and Arizona excluding Mexican and Chinese workers. About 3000 men will be affected. The section workers are unorganized and have made no demands.
At Norwich University a conference launched efforts to form the Aero Club of Vermont to be one of America’s largest aero clubs. Prominent participants include Major Wallace Batchelder of the Aero Club of America and Admiral Robert E. Peary, the North Pole discoverer, who is devoting much time to aviation.

Peace talks with Carranza may delay movement briefly. guards synchronized with ball cartridges to protect stores during the night.
The Associated Press reports another clash between 250 revolutionists in Santo Domingo and American Marines. Admiral Caperton says twenty seven Dominicans were killed and five captured. One Marine was killed and eight wounded. The fight occurred July 1.
The tropical hurricane's center hit Mobile and Pensacola with the storm moving northwest toward Jackson and Meridian. Inland from the gulf, it traveled at about eighty miles per hour, cutting Mobile Pensacola and Mississippi coast cities off from all communication. No trains in or out of New Orleans due to washouts and flooded lines. southeastern Louisiana residents believed safe as the storm bypassed their area.
Camp Stafford Alexandria Louisiana July 6 1916 Company D mustered into federal service at 11 am. Ceremony marked the unit as the first in Louisiana and likely the South to volunteer under the National Guard Act granting the president authority to deploy overseas for national service.

Compton Vaughan confessed to police that he shot and killed Geo. Barnett near Sunoli during a card game. He claims to be the son of the late Mrs. Kate Compton Vaughan a New Orleans writer and Franklin Vaughan, an attorney of Monroe, La. His parents were once well known in Monroe, but Vaughan has been absent from the area for years, his father moved to DeRidder to practice law.
Grand jury in Baton Rouge returned indictments against Senator Fields for assault with a dangerous weapon and against Times-Picayune correspondent Dr. J. Ewing for assault and battery. The confrontation on Third Street followed a published article by Ewing that the senator publicly denounced, during which Ewing was stabbed.
Robert W. Wolley, director of the Mint, was selected as publicity manager of the Democratic National Campaign. He previously directed the publicity bureau for Wilson's first presidential bid.
Baton Rouge July 5 The Senate cleared its calendar by six and adjourned as the House works toward final adjournment tonight. All remaining administration bills including clerks of court salary measures were sent to Governor Pleasant for signing. Judge Richardson endorsed Wilson without dissent in a concurrent resolution. Delos Johnson and Powell clashed over travel funds for circuit judges while a five member commission studied a statewide good roads project. Several measures passed or died as the session neared its close with adjournment expected Thursday night.
The Senate approved several measures including the Webb building code bill and Shells railroad office requirement in Louisiana. Husons gambling prohibition near Naborton High School passed Senate. Leopold house bill authorizing a 1,000,000 bond for the West End Spanish Fort seawall and driveway, plus constitutional amendment adoption, moved forward. Leon R Smiths foreign lawyers bar bill failed in House. Boyers legislative commission on procedure passed House 100 to 0.
A message from the revenue cutter Tallapoosa in Mobile harbor at noon states Mobile's towers were blown down with no indicated damage in Mobile. Barataria and Grara Isle are reported safe.
Baton Rouge July 6 Governor Pleasant sent to the senate for confirmation several appointments including G C Goldson to the fifth district levee board, W B Grayson to the Tensas levee board, Dr T A Roy to the state health board, and eight members to the State University board namely S Mc Lawrason John H Overton Jerome Mouton George Hill J Frank Herbert H S Chenet J L Adams and Lester Gumbel.
Superintendent A R Taylor reports Iron Mountain Louisiana division will keep on full pay employees officially enlisted in State Militia or National Guard when called to active duty. Workers who enlist after the president's call may return to their old jobs after service but will not be paid for their absence.
Washneton July 5 a War Department list names two regular army officers permitted to accept commissions in state National Guard units. One regular officer per guard regiment allowed. Included are Captain Albert B Sloan Infantry to lieutenant colonel Second Arkansas Infantry and Lieutenant Campbell B Hodges Fourth Infantry to lieutenant colonel First Louisiana Infantry.
Bodies of Capt. Boyd, Lt. Adair, and seven Negro troopers reinterred after exhumation from a single Carrizal grave. Uniforms torn, bodies mixed, transfer watched by a few hundred as Villistas pursue Carranza forces after Coral Ranch victory.
General Ignacio Ramos and his Carranza troops fought a bloody day near Corral Ranch, 15 miles southwest of Jiminez. Villa forces attacked relentlessly as Ramos refused to retreat, dying at his entrenchments while urging his men. Reinforcements were expected but the position held until nightfall.
