Robert C. Ruark, renowned author and columnist, died in London after internal bleeding resisted treatment. U S Loses Soldier and Planes in Viet Nam Attack
AP dispatch from Saigon reports a Viet Cong assault on Da Nang base killing a young Air Policeman and destroying three planes while damaging three others. Do Xuan Hien, 29, identified by a U S spokesman, provided details on infiltrating with the 18th Regiment, 325th Division. The attack began at 1 30 a m from a graveyard outside the perimeter. Bridges, barracks and radar sites were hit as U S forces conducted strikes elsewhere. Marines landed at Qui Nhon to bolster security as 400 to 500 sailors and Marines prepare to defend the area and assist in combat support for South Viet Nam's forces. The mounting clashes and rising American casualties continue amid a widening U S response in the central highlands and coastal regions. The unofficial combat death toll since December 1961 stands at 445.
