Paris Jan 25 AP Over American objections the United Nations political committee backed Russia’s package deal to admit five Soviet satellites and nine other nations to the UN. The 21 12 25 abstentions vote sent the measure to the General Assembly but failed to clear the two thirds needed for adoption. The resolution urged the Security Council to admit 14 applicants Albania Bulgaria Hungary Romania Mongolia and other western sponsored states Ireland Italy Ceylon Finland Nepal Australia Jordan Libya Portugal in one group.
Attorneys for 15 California Communist party leaders dropped their injunction to block an Los Angeles Times expose. Trial for the defendants will begin February 1 as defense lawyers withdrew the suit, saying they could not draw the line between the first and.
Baton Rouge Jan 25 AP Vote registration in Louisiana reached a record 1 011 755 with many parishes still to report January additions. White registration rose 2 4 percent to 916 732 while Negro registration climbed 8 7 percent to 95 023. Orleans Parish led with 4 806 white and 18 Negro new registrants.
