Dimmock cites strong recruiting results, but gaps show sailors not shipping across ratings as shipping demands rise.

Bert Coverdale reelected assessor and Dr J T French reelected coroner.
Marine Platoon Sergeant Pineapple Puckett was fatally struck by a hidden Japanese machine gun while directing aid to a fallen comrade during a forward assault on Bougainville. Peters, a Navy corpsman, recalls Puckett bellowing for a litter bearer as he exposed himself to guide wounded men to safety.
Three fliers killed and one seriously injured in a B 26 bomber crash in a wooded area north of Shreveport. Second Lieutenant J T Rodgers 23 of Lubbock Texas Sergeant James L Lentes 20 of Detroit Michigan Second Lieutenant Richard H Clendenin 21 of Springfield Illinois die. Clendenin died at Barksdale field hospital from severe head injuries Staff Sergeant Willard A Frederick 24 of Bellevue Ohio had a fractured arm. Plane struck treetops while attempting a forced landing.
Soviet forces on the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts launched a new offensive to pierce German lines and end the siege of Leningrad. The push targeted areas near Oranienbaum and Novgorod as part of a joint plan to break the encirclement around the northern city.
American 158th infantry aided by planes tanks and artillery drove 1000 yards of Japanese territory near the Arawe peninsula as part of the New Britain campaign. They killed 139 Japanese with light own losses as units reinforce landings on December 15 joining Marines at Cape Gloucester and supporting moves toward Rabaul and Kavieng.
Washington reports that the Soviet Union received 538 million dollars in lend-lease exports in November, the highest monthly total yet. Foreign Economic Administrator Leo Crowley announced total shipments to Russia now total 3.888 billion dollars, with more than half in military equipment.
Washington January 19 The senate banking committee approved Senator Bankhead's bill to end government price support subsidies by June 30, sending it to the senate floor by a 10 to 9 vote after two Republicans Taft and Tobey switched to support. The measure mirrors House passed anti subsidy legislation from November.
Secretary of War Stimson and Navy Secretary Knox faced a cool reception as the Austin-Wadsworth national service bill stalled in the Senate and was pigeonholed in the House. Senator Johnson accused officials of trying to Prussianize Americans, while Roosevelt urged wartime labor conscription to sustain production.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons the Soviet Polish border issue is extremely difficult and delicate. He said Britain is in close contact with Moscow and the Polish government in exile to seek a friendly settlement of crucial European importance. He added Britain will not urge the United States to block an investigation of Japanese internment camps, leaving that decision to the U.S. government.

Homer Best and P P Calahan contend for police juror from Simsboro Ward 3 while incumbents Frasier Napper Bennett Madden and others are renominated. Ward One Ruston results show Moncrief Garr and Thompson winning in a multi candidate race. Final senatorial counts place Goff ahead of Rhodes in the 28th district with Union Lincoln tallies near 2,151 to 1,363.
In Washington the Office of Censorship urged a complete moratorium on backstairs gossip and hairline authenticity about the European invasion. Byron Price warned editors and broadcasters to withhold time place troop movement and weapon details to prevent aiding the enemy.
Unofficial fourth term draft gains footing as Culbert Olson and James C. Quigley push for solid California and midwestern backing. Olson says California delegates will vote on first ballot for Roosevelt Wallace ticket to sustain wartime leadership and transition to peace. The meeting of 13 states and a national committee session to choose a new chairman is planned ahead of a Chicago nominating convention likely in July.
Seven railroad presidents rising to colonels were released after 21 days of service. At $493.33 monthly pay each, they earned about $330 plus self paid uniform costs, far from a gravy train. Some collected civilian salaries while in uniform.
In New Orleans and across parishes, Governor Morgan leads with 65 074 votes to Davis 60 207 as returns arrive from 1 867 precincts. James H Morrison trails with 17 325 votes amid slow tabulation of outer parish results and long standing political machines.

Earl K Long, brother of Huey Long, takes decisive early lead in lieutenant governor race with 61 981 votes from 501 of 1 867 precincts. Emile Verret outraised by Davis backed ticket. Ellis runs third. Verret trails in gubernatorial and local results as Morgan led ticket candidates lag.
Fr Dr Ben R Slater won the Plaquemines parish sheriff nomination by about four to one over Walter J Blaize in yesterdays primary as returns from 12 of 15 precincts show Slater with 1526 votes to 339 for Blaize. Governor Sam Jones has appointed Slater and charged him with setting up a separate office, with ongoing intrusion suit and court actions over Dauterive's succession. Plaquemines remains under martial law as Jones troops maintain control in the parish.
