Baton Rouge January 1 to 7 State Labor Commissioner B W Cason announced Louisiana holds 16 743 311 14 in funds from employers and employees under unemployment compensation law now on deposit with the federal treasury to meet claims. To mark the first anniversary of the initial payment Cason presented 26 year old Charles Zeringue a check for 18 to cover one week of unemployment. Zeringue a bridge worker temporarily laid off has since regained his job. The check brings the total number of state issued unemployment checks to 57 036 since January 1938, when the first check was issued to J D Shelton, an unemployed house painter.
