House Census Committee Back Siegel Plan For 483 Members

The House census committee voted to report the Siegel bill setting membership at 483, an increase of 48, with a constitutional amendment to cap future houses at 500. One representative per 218 979 inhabitants was set, no state losing, Louisiana and Mississippi no gains, while several southern states gain seats. Tinkham cited 3 000 to 4 000 blacks in his district and Massachusetts disenfranchisement estimates at 4 to 5 percent.

The Monroe fire department was called to Harrison and Hall streets at 6 45 this morning. A gas stove blaze caused minor damage to a dwelling as firefighters quickly extinguished it.

The annual stockholders meeting of the Monroe Grocer Company elected the same board for the coming year. Directors include R. J. Edwards of Oklahoma City, B. B. Handy, W. M. Washburn, L. R. In Marianna Arkansas two early morning fires destroyed a garage and a store building causing an estimated loss of 160000 dollars. Fire crews battled flames through dawn with damage reporting heavy and no injuries listed.

Joint session weighs Hamburg line abandonment request

The Louisiana Railroad Commission and the Arkansas Corporation Commission will meet in Shreveport tomorrow to hear Hamburg business interests oppose the proposed abandonment of a six mile Arkansas & Louisiana Missouri line from Rolfe Junction to Hamburg. Minister Believed Dead Revived After Pounding

Rev. R. P. Fain a well known South Georgia preacher was declared dead at a ministers meeting in Valdosta. Fifteen minutes later another preacher revived him with energetic pounding. Acute indigestion is cited as the cause of his illness.

The Meyer Brothers building at Grand and Grammont, leased by the Tidwell brothers, was condemned by the city. Tidwell brothers had planned four to five thousand dollars in improvements and had begun work exceeding one thousand dollars before condemnation due to wall condition.
