Captain Berry and 62 passengers and crew of the steamer Kanawha were rescued after the vessel sank in the Ohio River near dam 9. Survivors were found along four miles of river bank. Berry planned to search for any missing lives as the Kanawha blew into a pier and began sinking and then overturned.

Baton Rouge Jan 6 Governor Hall has accepted Col. C Harrison Parker's resignation as president of the penitentiary board and will name a successor in a few days. He issued two letters to Parker noting regret at his resignation and indicating no decision yet on timber tract purchases by the board.
Chairman Stone of the committee and President Wilson discussed the Persia case as Ambassador Penfield reported no new proof of torpedoing.
