Westbrook Pegler condemns a Paris New York City referendum plan to establish a state lottery aiming to raise about 300 million dollars annually. He argues lotteries fail to relieve poverty, worsen public finances, and substitute taxation with zero-sum profits, urging wage cuts and service cost increases instead.
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has aided four fifths of the nearly 250000 polio victims over fourteen years. More than 120000000 dollars from March of Dimes funds has been spent to restore health. Monroe citizens committee approves south city expansion under the 650000 fire bond plan. Work will start with architect bids for a 150000 addition to Central Fire Station on St John Street and relocation of the Stone Street station to Orange Street. South side station will gain a drill ground training tower and draft pit. Old Stone Street site acquisition at 1580 dollars approved. Old Station to be sold to fund improvements. Committee notes purchase difficulties and will report further.
Merl Young his brother Herschel and Washington attorney Joseph H. Rosenbaum did not show in court to enter pleas to perjury indictments. Judge James R. Kirkland ordered arrest warrants after their absence. they face charges over lying to a senate subcommittee and possibly a federal grand jury regarding reconstruction finance corporation loans.
Absentee ballots for the January 15 Democratic primary may be cast at the Ouachita parish clerk of court office from January 5 to January 12. Clerk R Dean Farr said applicants must swear they will not be in the parish on January 15 and ballots will be mailed to the voter's ward and precinct in sealed envelopes opened after all other ballots.
North Korea and China reject key elements of a six point Allied prisoner exchange plan at Panmunjom. The talks show no progress toward an armistice as subcommittees report stalemate and both sides plan to reconvene.
U S officials voiced grave concern over a Soviet proposal to have the United Nations Security Council handle Korean armistice negotiations. Benjamin Onn Cohen said the move could delay or disrupt Panmunjom talks and questioned whether the Russians seek peace or to reopen the conflict. The plan, backed by Andrei Vishinsky, aims to broaden council discussions to all international tensions.

In Jonesboro Arkansas a 32 year old farm mother of eleven was charged with first degree murder for shooting her husband while he slept. She claimed repeated beatings and threats over ten years. Her oldest son Claude Jr. 14 was charged as an accomplice on a technicality for re loading a rifle. The couple’s children present during the events included Amos 11. The husband Claude Arnder 59 was shot at their Cash Arkansas home.
Paris reports from French sources say 200,000 Red China soldiers with full battle gear are clustered north of the French Indo China border. They doubt an attack during Korea fighting but fear invasion once a Korea armistice is reached. UN delegates echoed fears amid Vishinsky hints.
Five hunters from Monroe and Winnfield face January 25 district court, charged with night hunting with lights, killing a deer, trespassing, and resisting arrest. Washington on January 4 reports the government approved a 4.97 percent price rise for Ford passenger cars with smaller hikes for Mercury and Lincoln models under Capehart amendments. The Office of Price Stabilization noted Ford had not stated if the increases will take effect.
