Westbrook Pegler condemns the AFL leadership as corrupt and hypocritical for backing anti communism abroad while betraying labor at home. He attacks George Meany and William Green, Dylan Roosevelt era politics, and charges misused funds and cozy ties with European unions.
A cold front crossed into northern Louisiana and Mississippi bringing soupy rain and fog. By morning the front lowerd temperatures with Shreveport and Monroe at 40 degrees while New Orleans reported 64 degrees and forecasts warned near freezing by tomorrow for northern areas. Local towns recorded varied lows from 40s to mid 40s as the front progressed.
The Reds dismiss an Allied exchange plan as a barter of slaves while a U N negotiator counters they misinterpret the proposal. North Korea says a one-for-one swap is not acceptable and calls for all-for-all trade, with a mass civilian exchange after prisoners are settled. Subcommittees remain deadlocked over rights to build airfields during a potential armistice.
Paris dispatch reports the Soviet Union urged a top level security council meeting under the UN charter to seek an armistice in Korea. The bid was made in a 60 nation committee as a counter to a Western anti aggression draft, with Vishinsky denouncing it as a path to war.
A $228,313 federal aid contract was awarded to Forcum-James Co. of Baton Rouge to build a steel span and concrete approaches on state route 14 in Quachita and Richland parishes. A detour bridge will be erected over LaFourche on the Winnsboro road, with construction to start soon and traffic to use the temporary span during erection of the permanent bridge.
The New Orleans States observed its 72nd birthday today. Founded January 3, 1880 by Maj. H. J. Hearsey, the paper was purchased by the Times-Picayune Publishing Co. in 1933.
The Henry Thacker family reports ongoing haunting activity from a ghostly visitor since Sunday in their 23 year old Louisville home. Objects including a two pound photo album a corn cob and a ring box have moved or flown, with witnesses describing rising spectacles and a box striking a patrolman and ceiling. One 16 year old student offered kinetic energy as an explanation while neighbors remain curious and skeptical.
J P Sam Norris Sr 52 of 112 Linderman West Monroe died early Thursday from a heart attack after reporting for work at Joseph T Mickel and Son Funeral services set for Friday 2 pm at First Baptist Church West Monroe Rev Jaroy Weber officiating Interment Hasley cemetery Pallbearers named Sam Humphries J Brewer Haynes T Mickel Ed Thomas Jeff W Caldwell Norris was employed by the Mickel company since 1938 and was a well known figure in north Louisiana Mississippi and Arkansas He was born September 26 1899 in Farmerville and married Pauline Zimmer He is survived by his widow one son and three siblings in the Norris family and other relatives
A new Maid of Cotton will be chosen from 19 Cotton Belt entrants in Memphis. Finalists, all previous state winners, meet judges in interviews before a pageant fashion show. The winner becomes King Cotton's ambassador with a six month tour and an all cotton wardrobe. Swimwear is excluded and judging emphasizes background knowledge and poise.
Delegates at a special steel union convention in Atlantic City consider delaying a work stoppage as CIO chief Philip Murray and USW back President Truman’s appeal to keep production. The USW seeks about 1.81 per hour raise plus union shop terms, while industry offers no raise and seeks price relief. The wage policy group orders workers to stay on the job while the WSB reviews a potential settlement.
Sun Oil Co purchased oil and gas leases in Ouachita parish for 545 acres at a total of $8,175. The agreements filed December 31 include 40 acres from P F Sills for $600, 180 acres from T M Hammond for $2,700, 305 acres from Fred Staples for $4,575, and 20 acres from H T Hammond for $300.
Governor Earl K. Long will be in Monroe this evening at the Virginia hotel inviting friends to attend. Spaht for Governor headquarters open soon at the same hotel room 221 invites visitors for literature and information.
A second North Atlantic storm tests Captain Kurt Carlsen and the Flying Enterprise. The U S Navy destroyer John W Weeks stands by while the Turmoil races from Falmouth to tow the stricken freighter. Weather rough winds up to 63 miles an hour. Carlsen vows to stay afloat until towed or sunk. Captain Parker of the Turmoil warns of a massive, delicate tow job needing 12 men to handle tow ropes.
In Phoenix area on January 3, eight of the 28 people killed in a C-47 crash on Armer Mountain were taken to a Mesa mortuary. Evacuation teams, aided by Arizona cowboys, labor to recover the mangled remains as identification teams from Wright Patterson AFB assist.
Harold E. Stassen announced he will enter Ohio Pennsylvania and Minnesota GOP presidential primaries. A former Minnesota governor he left the University of Pennsylvania presidency to pursue the nomination and may consider New Hampshire Wisconsin and Nebraska later.
President Truman outlined a sweeping reorganization of the scandal tainted Internal Revenue Bureau as Congress near its return. He promised further actions to ensure integrity, while 53 more agency employees were dismissed or suspended this year, totaling 166 for 1951. Senator Russell urged caution before civil service coverage.
Shriners of Monroe and West Monroe stage a one day polio fund drive with 80 Shriners in uniform manning booths in downtown Monroe and West Monroe locations along Louisville avenue and in front of Woolworths Central Savings Bank and Trust Company. Fred Hoffman leads the effort and urges strong public support to surpass last year’s $1500 record.
