Plane crash kills Roberto Clemente and four others

A four engine DC7 cargo plane carrying Pirates star Roberto Clemente and four others crashed into the Atlantic after takeoff from San Juan en route to Managua. Coast Guard searches found wreckage with no survivors. Clemente, 38, headed Puerto Rico relief efforts for Nicaragua quake survivors and had been due to depart Sunday.

Social Security law increases benefits and taxes

A new Social Security measure signed by President Nixon raises wage subject to Social Security tax from 9000 to 10808 and tax rate from 5.2 to 5.85 percent. It expands benefits for widows, allows earning without benefit loss, equalizes spousal retirement, and tightens Medicare Part B deductibles. It also requires Social Security numbers on school entry and lowers disability waiting from six to five months.

Former Bastrop Attorney Hawthorne Dies at Arkansas Camp

Harry Singleton Hawthorne 64, Bastrop city attorney for 36 years, died Sunday night at his camp near Wilmot Arkansas after an apparent heart attack. Orleans sniper gunfire kills cadet and wounds two officers

In New Orleans late Sunday a sniper killed 19 year old police cadet Alfred Harrell as he spoke with Lt. Horace Perez. Perez was wounded in the ankle and released after treatment. Patrolman Edwin Hosh was then seriously wounded in a separate warehouse incident while Officers Harold Blappert assisted the investigation. No link between the two shootings was indicated.
