Nation’s first law allowing terminally ill patients to request a natural death takes effect in California this Saturday. The measure, part of a broader push for end of life rights, is expected to influence debates nationwide as courts assess physician aid in dying and patient autonomy.
The forecast calls for very cold conditions with a windy northeast wind at 25 mph. Skies are mostly sunny today with a high near 35 and a low around the teens tonight. New York United Press International reports that a Harris poll of 1,510 adults for 1977 shows Americans aiming for peace and self betterment. Nine percent want peace on earth and end to wars, eight percent strive for tolerance and understanding, eight percent seek to help others, two percent want to be better citizens and care more about where they live.
Washington AP The House Committee on Assassinations plans a 6.5 million dollar budget request for 1977 as it drafts a 26 page report on the King and Kennedy killings. James Earl Ray says he was framed in a letter to the panel while attorney James Lesar resists prison interviews. The panel also probes a CIA tape of Oswald discussing a visa to the Soviet Union and a possible conspiracy lead in Portugal.
United Press International reports armed groups supporting the Gang of Four and opposing Hua Kuo-feng disrupted Paoting with bank robberies factory raids and hijackings. Army units have reestablished order but not provincial administration. Paoting 125 miles south of Peking hosts 500000 people and lies on a major rail line. Violence spans more than a dozen provinces.
