Saigon reports a 24 hour New Year cease-fire by American and South Vietnamese forces after more than 200 enemy casualties in the prior hours. Allied air and artillery strikes were suspended while reconnaissance patrols continued amid fears of a North Vietnamese offensive near the lunar New Year.
Virginia Buckner Pierce 52 of 1015 Hilton Street Monroe died at home after a short illness. Funeral services Thursday at 10 a.m. in Mulhearn Funeral Home Monroe with Dr. Carl Luey officiating. Burial Memorial Park Cemetery. She was a lifelong Monroe resident, wife of R L Pierce. Survived by two daughters, her mother, one sister, one brother, and four grandchildren. Pallbearers named.

Rhonda Gayle Thornton a 20 year old from Meridian Mississippi was named the 1970 Maid of Cotton chosen from 20 finalists. Alternate picks were Louellen Aden New Orleans and Ruth Gooding Simmons Decatur Georgia. Thornton a University of Mississippi junior joins a long line of titleholders and will attend Cotton Bowl events then a North American tour with a Rome trip planned for next summer.
Monroe utilities commissioner H W McSherry announced buses will run on a holiday schedule Thursday to let workers be with families for New Year’s Day. Charity Hospital Powell Avenue and Bernstein Park routes start 6 30 a m and run every minutes to final trip 8 30 p m. Park Avenue route will not run.

S Sgt David Mitchell of Fort Hood faces general court martial on assault with intent to murder in My Lai case. The 29 year old from Saint Francisville La will be tried at Fort Hood in a public proceeding with a military judge allowed to limit access to classified details.
Gov. John McKeithen issued an amended proclamation granting state employees New Year’s Day Friday off as well. The holiday period now extends from Thursday through Sunday, January 4, covering a four day break for state workers in Baton Rouge.
