West Virginia lumber country unrest fuels a clash over unionization. A UMWA International Rep. accuses local figures of propaganda while alleging ongoing gunfire and biased reporting. He calls for investigations as workers face firm control and wartime defense jobs.
General Douglas MacArthur called for retaliatory actions against Japan after the Manila bombings he described as a flagrant violation of international law. A War Department communique cited damage to undefended Manila and deliberate targeting of churches and cultural centers, including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Washington December 4 The War Department approved a plan to enroll women as privates and sergeants in the United States Army. A feminine corps would work directly with the Army the Aircraft Warning Service and other non combatant units. The plan, urged by Secretary Stimson in a letter to Congress, would cost about 3 million dollars in 1942. The bill by Edith Nourse Rogers would create the corps with women officers and privates paid in line with Army pay scales.
New Orleans, Dec. W. i) With March gains, noise from whistles at locomotives factories and ships in the harbor will be curtailed for New Year celebrations. Dr Joseph C Menendez director of aviation defense for the South says signals will be held for use as air raid warnings.
British and Japanese casualties run high as Ipoh is abandoned and new lines are set to the south. Reuters notes heavy hand to hand fighting with many deaths, while Chinese Communist authorities call for street by street defense. Sultan of Negri Sembilan urges全民抗戰 as allies meet in Singapore to coordinate strategy.
Mrs. Margaret Bickell of Nutley recounts watching husband Lt George R. Bickell shot down over Pearl Harbor. She describes wounding bullets shredding their car windshield, fleeing on foot, and his return to battle after surviving the sea.
