London reports a British Comando raid on Vaagso island 100 miles north of Bergen destroyed eight enemy ships totaling 15 650 tons, oil tanks and ammunition stores and a Quisling industrial plant. German casualties cited, 120 killed and 95 captured, with some Norwegian civilians returning with Commandos.
Government petroleum experts expect a significant drop in 1942 civilian gasoline use as new tire restrictions curb access to tires and inner tubes. Officials say motorists will conserve fuel for essential travel and emergencies, possibly delaying direct gasoline rationing.
Two American freighters the Manini of Matson and the Prusa of Lykes both sank after torpedo attacks on December 17. Mrs. Victor Mahr wife of Pearl Harbor government service member is returning to Monroe from Hawaii likely by night train Monday. She last sent word from Arizona while en route and will stay with her parents at 813 North Fourth Street West Monroe. Her family had feared for her safety after thrilling experiences in Hawaii where her husband was stationed at Wheeler Field.

Harrisburg, Dec 29. Eight coal miners died in a gas explosion at Peabody Coal company mine No 47 near Marco. Rescue squads toiled 17 hours to recover the remains, seven bodies found within 12 hours after the 3 39 am blast, the eighth being Harold Helden 3. Continued on Third Page.

Registration nears 167,000 as Maestri seeks renomination with Old Regular support while Racivitch backs reform allies. HONOLULU December claims detail how fewer than 400 Marines with four planes held off a superior Japanese force for 14 days on Wake Island. They destroyed 12 aircraft and five ships before falling, with bold resistance praised by the navy as a historic effort amid relentless bombardment and dwindling supplies.
Moscow and London announced full accord on war conduct after talks between Stalin and Eden.
