Westbrook Pegler denounces U S actions in Korea as abandoning an American army to a UN framework. He condemns President Truman as erratic and confronts critics in Congress and the Democratic Party, naming figures he regards as traitors and scapegoating Rooseveltlaunched policy.
Slippery roads killed five people in wet south weather. An Aliceville Alabama family of four died when their truck collided with a another near Vance Alabama. A Louisiana crash killed Harry H Martin Jr and injured another. Rain persisted from Alabama to the Carolinas with some freezing glaze in places.
Washington reports the national production authority imposes tight sales and use controls on cobalt to conserve the metal for defense. NPR officials say the move will hit radio and TV manufacturers hard and affect other civilian products, as cobalt is used in speakers, steel alloys, magnets, gun barrels, jet engine parts, and cemented carbides. About 95 percent of cobalt used in the United States comes from the Belgian Congo.
Detroit reports the auto industry will trim production at the start of the new year due to national emergency demands. Cutbacks, ranging about 20 to 30 percent, will idle thousands of workers and hit General Motors Packard Ford and Studebaker. Most defense work will occur outside Detroit, with temporary unemployment expected as plants convert to defense production.
New Orleans December 29 Rep Overton Brooks of Shreveport urged stronger Caribbean defenses and mined approaches to the Mississippi River saying submarines could strike coastal targets days before hostilities. He warned the Gulf could become an American lake to deter enemy submarines and claimed Russians have advanced submarines able to launch aircraft and atom bombs on coastal cities.
Pvt. Hubert E. Reeves, 19, frostbitten in North Korea, hovers between life and possible amputation as Army doctors at Percy Jones Hospital attempt saving his hands and feet with penicillin and careful treatment. His mother, Wanetta Reeves, says he stays strong and morale remains high despite the danger of losing limbs.
Hong Kong December 29 reports Communist China seized all United States property and froze U S bank deposits in retaliation for U S action on December 16. Chou En Lai called the move an attempt to loot the Chinese people. US official says total under 100 million dollars.
The Oakland commission of public charities denied the March of Dimes permission to run its annual fund raising campaign next month. Four to two vote cited excessive campaign and administrative costs and inadequate accounting of funds sent to the national headquarters of the infantile paralysis fund. Dan Marovich, regional director, said the decision was inexplicable given open books and prior transparency.
Washington dispatch reports Robert Smith 20, the first quadruple amputee of the Korean War, greeted his mother Clara Smith at Walter Reed Hospital. Mrs. Smith traveled from Middleburg Pennsylvania with help from the American Legion which chartered the plane and covers his expenses. Doctors plan a temporary claw for daily tasks, followed by artificial hands and legs. pension set at 360 dollars monthly.
Washington reports virtually all physicians dentists and veterinarians under 50 not already registered must sign up January 15 for the military draft. Draft Director Hershey estimates about 210000 medical men will register with 13000 doctors needed to care for a planned 3.5 million servicemen. Dr Meiling outlines four priority groups for call up and notes aliens regulators and reserve officers are exempt. General Hershey sent notices to state selective service directors.
New York dispatch notes Japan, once a dangerous foe, showing strong willingness to aid in Korea. Thousands of ex soldiers volunteered, newspapers tout Japan's duty to help the democracies, tied interests with the United States, and desire for normal trade and UN participation.

President Truman signed legislation authorizing about 38 million dollars in food aid to Yugoslavia, bringing total U.S. assistance to roughly 69 million. The move diverts 50 million in Marshall Plan funds, with 12 million recovery funds and 6 million in import export loans already available. Food shipments began in November to support Marshal Tito's army.
Washington reports the army has no plans to call many reserve officers above captain as it expands ground forces. It says junior officers are in greatest demand for training recruits, while majors and higher remain sufficient for now.
