A fire in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, engulfed a four story Mongeau building known as the Medical Arts Building. Fire crews from 11 communities contained the flames after destroying an entire city block housing 25 doctors offices, a drug store, shoe store, cafe, and paint shop. The blaze began at 1 40 a m and two policemen rescued a caretaker and his wife. One firefighter sustained facial and hand burns as smoke incapacitated many responders.
