The National Cancer Institute study across 10 American metro areas finds 32 of every 100 newborns may develop cancer in their lifetimes. Despite rising incidence 1937 to 1947, authors cite progress from better diagnostics, more trained doctors, and improved economic conditions.
Jehovah's Witnesses hold an area convention in Monroe at Hotel Virginia starting this afternoon through Saturday with speaker W. D. Couch of New York City. His lecture titled Overcoming the Fears of this Generation will be delivered in the Hotel Virginia ballroom Sunday at 3 p.m. About 600 attendees are expected from Louisiana Arkansas and Texas.
In New York diplomats doubt Syria can force a U N Security Council meeting to expel Israel from the United Nations or impose penalties after the Galilee attack. Syria pressed a seven point resolution urging punitive measures, but observers note Syria has no council seat and action requires a member state request. Shukairi reportedly asked the Soviet Union to sponsor the proposal, with Moscow likely to only urge consideration.
California and Oregon faced devastating floods as rivers overflowed from week of rain. At least 10 dead, 15 000 homeless in California, state of emergency declared in stricken counties. Reno flood along Truckee River forced hotel closures, National Guard and 500 Stead Air Force Base airmen assisted, 26 000 sandbags used. Evacuations near Marysville and Tulare county towns continued. Nearby Oregon towns South Fork and Weott wiped out as Eel River debris claimed victims.
Dr Otto John, once East German intelligence chief, was formally arrested by West German authorities on suspicion of treason. Federal Prosecutor Carl Wiechmann said investigators will review possible other offenses and whether John divulged state secrets. The arrest followed his return from East Germany in July 1954 and ongoing detention since December. his wife flew in from London after the news broke.

Mrs. Sam Oden of 1620 Sterlington Road told Monroe police today her billfold with a number of dollars disappeared after being jostled by four men during a downtown store purchase. She said packages fell to the floor and the men helped pick up items, then she realized the billfold was gone containing her driver's license and personal belongings.
Air Force announces S. Sgt. Raymond A. Doyle of New Bedford Massachusetts may receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving 14 aboard a C124 Globemaster by dangling 45 minutes to lock a landing gear amid cold winds and danger. Doyle volunteered after seeing a prior similar act.
Hundreds of Christmas pilgrims from Israeli and Arab communities crossed into Jordan toward Bethlehem through Mandelbaum Gate despite recent rioting in villages. About 50 pilgrims were refused entry by Jordanian authorities amid security tents and inspections.
Wylie Gross 37 of Hamilton Ohio was sentenced to two seven year concurrent terms at the Louisiana State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to two counts of simple burglary tied to crimes in Ward 7. Arlee Young Jr 26 Matewan WV received seven years on each count and Evelyn Arlene Slocum two three year sentences all concurrent.
Most Monroe city hall offices will close from Friday until Tuesday morning except police and fire. Twin Cities businesses will observe Monday as a holiday. Ouachita parish clerk of courts will stay open Saturday morning with short staff but closed all day Monday. Public offices hosted Friday parties at police and Monroe West Monroe Chamber of Commerce.
Concrete forms collapsed during roof preparation at a warehouse under construction in Shreveport Louisiana injuring ten men. Jose Perez 22 of Dallas was seriously hurt while seven others were hospitalized and two received first aid at the scene. The workers were employed by Pinner and Co. of Dallas with A W Callaway attributing the accident to excessive weight aloft and a gust of wind.
Rep Clarence Cannon says atomic war outcome is decided in the air and within an hour after Sagebrush maneuvers in Louisiana. He notes attacking air forces using simulated atomic weapons defeated the defense in about 40 minutes, with radar jammed and defenders surprised. The next war will be won or lost in the air.

Four armed men in Christmas delivery outfits robbed two elderly women of 16400 dollars in cash. Mrs. Bleake, 76, and Mrs. Plique, 59, were bound as the home was searched for valuables over about 45 minutes. Officers reported the bandits were polite and warned they would not be hurt.
Bids opened Thursday afternoon in the offices of Architects Johns and Neel for a brick veneer office building to serve several physicians. The lowest bid came from Harry E. Carpenter at $871. Eddyville Kentucky 37 year old Chester Merrifield who killed Louisville Patrolman Alvin Keown fainted in the electric chair and died without regaining consciousness. He arrived at the chair on crutches after a 1953 nightclub parking lot gun fight and left a written denial of the killing for release after his death.
