Nine year old Louis Fontana was in uncertain condition at St Francis Sanitarium with a neck wound. His mother said the injury occurred when the family firearm discharged accidentally while the boy and family were at the dining room table. The gun owner, Julius Fontana, said he carries a .22 pistol to work each day.
A fire at an east coast Canadian port leveled three wooden navy barracks. One seaman died, seven others were injured though not seriously, as many sailors on Christmas leave delayed evacuations. The blaze began on the second floor and trapped several sailors still asleep in hammocks.

An unidentified man about 40 with deep head gashes was found unconscious at 3 am Thursday in the 1400 block of Olive Street by Monroe police. He was taken to St Francis Sanitarium for X rays and was still unconscious in the afternoon. No ID marks were found on his clothing.
Associated Press reports a Christmas observance toll of at least 387 violent deaths across 48 states and DC. Traffic crashes caused 276 fatalities on Christmas Eve and Day, with 109 other violent deaths from fires, drownings, stabbings, poisonings, explosions and asphyxiation. New York led with 41 deaths, followed by Ohio 29 and Illinois 28, then California 24 and Pennsylvania 24.
A League of Women Voters survey shows 140 women elected to state legislatures in 29 states in November, with eight women joining Congress in January and 12 to major state offices. New England leads with 25 in Connecticut and 24 in New Hampshire, while Republicans outnumber Democrats in legislatures though growth is higher among Democrats.

Ralph Kimbrough of Arkansas died this morning in the Oak Grove jail after being arrested for drunkenness and disturbing the peace. Marshal T. J. Nix said Kimbrough, possibly connected with the Rural Electrification Administration in Winnsboro, caused a disturbance in a rooming house before being jailed. He was placed to bed and died a few minutes later. autopsy to determine cause.
Five day manhunt across Georgia and Tennessee ends with Charles Coates, 28, booked at Fulton county jail for the killing of Patrol Corporal W. F. Black near Ringgold Georgia. Coates, an escaped life term convict, surrendered after being tracked through woods, hunger and blood loss evident as a loaded .38 revolver was found. He says he does not know why he shot Black and had eaten mostly nuts and fruits while on the run. Continued on Tenth Page.

In Cannes, France, December 26, Fritz Thyssen, the German steel and armaments magnate stripped of German citizenship last February, has been detained by French police after living in Cannes for several months. Germany confiscated his extensive holdings following tensions with the Nazi regime.
Daniel Frohman 89 longtime dean of American stage producers died at Leroy Sanitarium after a fall and bronchial pneumonia. He had broken his hip in November and suffered complications of age and illness. His sister Etta Frohman and nephew Henry Davidson with him at death.

Sir Walter Layton of the ministry of supply told Britain that US production of war materials will peak next winter if Britain holds on through 191. He warned not to expect a miracle from the United States and noted the weight of US armament may not arrive until late summer 1941, with avalanche proportions next winter. He added that America’s role makes “non-belligerent” a fitting label rather than neutral.

In Shreveport a 35 year old salesman, Frank Jones, was found suffocated and badly blistered after a fire in a two story apartment. Firefighters say he was buried but moved to a bed area where his body was recovered after the blaze was extinguished. His daughter was away. property damage listed at about $2,000.
