Rescue efforts at the Mowequa Community mine continue with drills and shovels as 16 more victims are found, raising total deaths to 28 from Saturday’s gas explosion. Crews plan to reach 24 remaining men in the south wing of the T shaped shaft within six hours.
Linden Texas three men sheriff Nat Cartright say arraigned on charges of strangling Bernice Clayton a three year old crippled by infantile paralysis by involving her father Sherman Clayton and Coy Oakley and Paul Oakley preachers said they were guided by God to cure the girl neighbors witnessed a disturbance in the Clayton home the mother Mozelle Clayton prayed in the kitchen during the incident.
In Ouachita parish Pleas Mayo from a small Calhoun farm near Ward 6 is among the first to pay current year taxes after the sheriff announced the tax roll would be ready. Mayo, who farms methodically with cotton yield of up to two bales a year and raises other crops, cows, chickens and pigs, faces no lean hardship. A Christmas tale follows about a Boston bull named Bill and a humorous family scene including a Kiddie Coop for travel, taxi fare quirks, and gifts.
Senator Vandenberg proposes to regulate and insure time deposits in banks by creating a federal time deposit insurance fund. The plan would classify deposits as at least 90 days, insure 75 percent, and finance the fund with a $125 million treasury appropriation plus reserve surplus and an annual deposits tax. The aim is to prevent runs and free loanable resources while opposing general federal deposit guarantees.
Norman E Mack, longtime Buffalo publisher and power in Democratic national politics, died at 74 in his Delaware Avenue home. He helped found the Sunday Times in 1879, served 32 years on the Democratic national committee, and became the party’s first life emeritus scroll honoree. His death marks the passing of Erie County’s last major Democratic trio member.
The corpse of Gertrude Modrow 19 formerly of Bellwood was identified by Ernst Dowerdt in a Wheaton morgue. The slain girl with three bullet wounds was found beside a country road by a milkman on Christmas Eve. Dowerdt offered no motive for the killing.
An explosion and ensuing fire destroyed an ice cream factory on North Broad Street in New Orleans. No injuries were reported though windows and adjacent buildings suffered damage. Estimated loss stood at 25000 dollars. Operators Jake Marziale and sister Josephine were questioned by police after Christmas.
Washington December 26 three leading Democratic candidates voiced confidence they will win the speakership. Rainey of Illinois said he has more than enough support, McDuffie of Alabama and Burns of Tennessee echoed optimism. The next House will have 313 Democrats 117 Republicans and five farmer-laborists, ensuring a Democratic election.

A Christmas weekend toll in the South reached 42 fatalities from accidents. Notable incidents include car crashes in North Carolina and Arkansas, drownings near Hot Springs, electrocution in Pine Bluff, and a collision involving a U S Naval Academy midshipman from Albany. Two sudden deaths in Monroe and a fire destroying two Twin Cities homes mar yesterday’s Christmas celebration. Kurt Dyche Lenard 38 of 3502 Lee avenue died of a heart attack en route to a local hospital. Manley Wright 33 died of pneumonia. Fire losses were at 104 Fairview avenue Monroe and 102 Claiborne avenue West Monroe. Freeman Lippman 32 Monroe Hardware salesman and American Legion member was seriously injured in a Saturday night auto crash returning from Shreveport. his brother Gus Lippman was slightly hurt.
Joe McGraw died from a stab wound to the heart following an alleged Saturday night clash with Joe Liberto a merchant jailed on murder charges Liberto and his companions reportedly fought with McGraw and two other youths when Liberto's 14 year old son was attacked.
In Washington December 26 the Senate judiciary committee could not act on the 3.2 percent beer bill due to lack of a quorum. Chairman Norris authorized a subcommittee to study the constitutional issues. House plans to resume with interior appropriations and agriculture supply measures as leaders push farm aid and banking reform in January.
Unidentified assailant caused 65 year old rug maker Peter Boymer to suffocate with a gag as a robber. Police believe robbery motive but could not probe deeper. Victim tied, rooms disturbed, watch and valuables stolen. neighbors report guests earlier.
