In New York on December 26 police report eight suicide attempts during the holiday amid festive scenes. Four men inhaled gas, one woman jumped from a roof, another drank poison, and a man fatally threw himself beneath a subway train. Five died. others are in critical condition.
Forty seven people, mostly children, were treated at New Orleans hospitals for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day injuries from pistols blank guns and firecrackers. None of the cases were reported as serious.
