Christmas Aid Goes to All in Ouachita Parish

Charitable agencies in Ouachita Parish unite to help every boy and girl for Christmas through the Goodfellows fund which reached 1920.10. Letters requesting aid are referred to the welfare office and health unit for country and city cases. Distribution of toys and food is underway at the Monroe Welfare office with family cards issued for pickup. Continued on Eleventh Page.

Bandit Suspect Heads Toward Texas After Bank Robbery

One of two bandit suspects who disarmed a sheriff and deputy during a Farmerville bank robbery is believed headed for the Sabine bottoms and Texas. Officers from three parishes, bloodhounds, and a posse are tracking the fugitive after he abandoned a car near De Quincy and disappeared into the piney woods.

Emile Bienvenu Named Insurance Examiner for Louisiana

Baton Rouge reports confirm Emile Bienvenu the New Orleans accountant has been designated by Secretary of State Alice Le Grosjean as Louisiana insurance examiner. The post, vacant previously, is duties shared among examiners as needed about every three years. Bienvenu, a CPA association secretary and former CPA board member, was previously involved in efforts to audit New Orleans city books under Governor Huey P. Long amid a local controversy.

Two Story Building Razed by Gas Explosion in Staten Island

A terrific illuminating gas explosion destroyed a two story building in Staten Island early today. The wrecked structure housed a meat market and an apartment. Residents in the apartment were visiting in Brooklyn when the blast occurred.

The No 2 A B Douglas gas well in Wewoka Oklahoma was snuffed out by a 45 pound nitro gelatin blast after a daylong blaze. Wild flow of gas and oil continued to threaten the area spraying an oil station and US Highway 270. Deep Rock officials expected 1 to 3 days to cap the well.

Three Escape Death As Mail Plane Crashes Into House

An all metal tri motor mail plane from Salt Lake City overshot Alhambra California field and crashed into a house early today. Pilots Bart Cox and George Sherwood escaped death along with a passenger whose name was not immediately learned. The fire destroyed 1445 pounds of Christmas mail with the plane and dwelling.

The census bureau reports 68,955,521 urban residents and 53,819,525 rural residents in the United States for 1930. Urban areas now include cities 2500 and over and towns with 10,000 plus population and 1000 per square mile density, expanding the prior definition.

Roger Calvert Dies in Washington Car Crash

Roger L. Calvert thirty, formerly of Ouachita parish high school, was killed instantly in an automobile accident in Washington D C. He had lived with his uncle Dr E G Calvert in West Monroe, left Meridian Miss where he was secretary to the Mobile and Ohio railroad and later to United States Senator John Sharpe Williams. He married with two children and is survived by his Mississippi parents. Funeral services likely in Meridian.
