The United States urged U Thant to take steps to arrange a peace, ceasing hostilities in Vietnam. The request was delivered to the UN secretary-general by U.S. Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg.
Lt Gov Carroll Gartin a leading 1967 gubernatorial hopeful died at Laurel hospital after an apparent heart attack. The 53 year old Laurel attorney and businessman served in his third term and had announced plans to run for governor next year. The death prompted tributes from Gov Paul Johnson former Gov Ross Barnett and others.
U S planes bombed the Ha Gia oil dump near Hanoi amid Communist intercepts but no dogfights. The raids followed recent strikes on Yan Dien and Van Dien targets as 1 400 soldiers of the 9th Infantry Division arrived in South Vietnam boosting U S forces toward 370 000.
The National Safety Council estimated a Christ mas weekend traffic toll between 650 and 750 deaths for the holiday period from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday Most drivers will be on the road raising travel to 7 6 billion miles The council urged caution and safe driving habits amid weather and traffic conditions
Twin Cities CHIT CHAT notes William Bradley Trimble Jr., son of Rev. and Mrs. W. B. Trimble of Monroe, is a junior at St. Luke's Hall School of Theology University of the South. He earned a B A from the University of the South in 1962 after four years in the U S Navy retiring as lieutenant.
The November 1965 to November 1966 period shows a rise in Quachita Parish employment per the Louisiana State Employment Service Labor Area Trends. Area workforce reaches about 45 200 with 33 525 employed in November 1966 down from October slightly.
Nine people died in Louisiana over the weekend in boating, car crashes, and a fire-related electrocution. George E. Ford, 29, drowned after a sailboat capsized on Lake Pontchartrain. Marc Hansen, 18, survived. Ramona Temple, 3, died from car injuries in Minden. Other crashes near LaPlace, Thibodaux, Hammond, Morgan City, and Monroe killed four more and injured several. A volunteer fireman Tillman Plaisance, 50, was fatally shocked battling a car fire.
Early fog in the Twin Cities and northeast Louisiana gave way to clear to partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs around 65 to 68 degrees, with cool nights and morning lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Winds light and variable at 5 to 12 mph.

Chester Morgan Sr prominent Madison Parish School Board member and Waverly farmer and cattleman died in a Houston Texas hospital. Funeral arrangements handled by Mulhearn Funeral Home Delhi. Morgan was a Mason and member of the First Baptist Church of Waverly.
L. J. Jones 78 pioneer in prospecting and developing oil fields in southwest Louisiana died Sunday in Crowley. A Tennessee native, he lived in Crowley since 1915. Funeral services were to be held in Crowley this afternoon. Survivors include his widow one son and a stepson, all of Crowley.
Two young Americans, Buel Ray Wortham of Arkansas and Craddock M. Gilmour of Utah, pleaded guilty in a Leningrad court to currency violations after touring Russia to celebrate discharge from the Army. Wortham faces potential eight years plus a possible three-year theft term. Gilmour faces up to eight years. Trial was to continue over three days.
Lt. Walter J. Marin Jr. of Washington Pennsylvania received the Medal of Honor from Secretary of the Army Stanley R. Resor for leading an assault near Chu Pong Mountain. He killed 18 North Vietnamese soldiers, was wounded, and his action inspired his fellow troops.
A tanker explosion on U.S. 36 near Indiana 67 in northeast Indianapolis killed at least five and stranded thousands as a fuel spill polluted storm sewers. Firefighters evacuated Meadowbrook and Roberta Park areas while schools and a shopping center closed. Police initially reported a death but later updated, and witnesses described flames and napalm-like blasts as the blaze spread through six vehicles.
