The brother of slain store operator George Backus, 54, posted a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his killer. Backus was killed Friday night. City officials noted he carried a thick roll of bills, while police found only two cents in his pockets.
Britain United States and Canada announced a plan to standardize arms and military training to enable full cooperation in necessity. No treaty or obligation is involved and the effort aims to develop common designs and standards while preserving each nation's control over its territory. The plan has been under discussion since 1947 with technical exchanges already under way.
Today the post office reports a large rush with all windows open and extra clerks. Four windows handle parcel post as tables guide crowds to ensure proper tying for crowded mail bags. Postmaster says Saturday was the peak last week. Tuesday may see big shipments. Despite two cent Christmas card stamps, many envelopes lack stamps or contain excess writing. only a signature is allowed without a three cent stamp.

New York Mayor William O'Dwyer and Miss Elizabeth Sloan Simpson plan a 8:30 a m Tuesday ceremony at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stuart Florida. The town has requested extra police and deputies to handle expected crowds for the wedding.
Nine northeast Louisiana parishes Tensas Madison West Carroll East Carroll Concordia Catahoula Morehouse Richland Franklin are designated disaster areas under Public Law 38. Congressman Otto Passman announced the move after a Washington conference with Dillard Lasseter. The Farmers Home Administration now administers the disaster loan program. residents may apply at local parish offices.
Two hunters perished in Louisiana incidents. Wiley Thomas Morgan, 67, of Felixville, missing since Wednesday, was found in a creek near his home. Allen Louis Marchand, 45, of Baton Rouge, drowned when his boat swamped at the Morganza spillway. Funeral services for both were held today. Morgan left a daughter and three sons, Marchand a widow and one son.
Good Fellows donations totaling 2236.67 include memorials for Rose Marie Pricy and E Jack Selig Jr and Sr, plus gifts from the Brown Paper Mill Peggy Strauss and several families. The column notes the fund is nearing its Christmas deadline and will close soon, urging aid for those in need.
Monroe stores will not all stay open nights next week. The Retail Merchants Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce announced most stores would stay open until 9 p m on the first five days, with some also open on next Saturday night. Downtown managers said they would keep regular hours. Advertisements will list which stores stay open.
In Hamburg on December 19 a British military court sentenced former Field Marshal Erich von Manstein to 18 years in prison for nine counts of atrocities by German troops in Poland and Russia. He was acquitted on eight counts and awaits higher authority confirmation.
In Taipei Formosa the Nationalist government announced Kunming, a World War II U S base, was recaptured by Chinese Nationalists. Li Mi was released at the airport after defecting troops fled westward along the Burma road. Nationalist planes strafed the retreating forces as Britain faced possible severance of relations over recognition of Red China. Police kept order near the British consulate as many sought visas to Hong Kong. Claire Dennault seized airport properties in Hong Kong and sought government protection for the China National Aviation and Central Air Transport Corps holdings.
Consul General Angus Ward and Mrs Ward arrived in Yokohama aboard the Lakeland Victory with 200 Americans cheering. They leave Mukden after a year’s detention by Chinese Reds and mark their 30th wedding anniversary. Ward recalled harsh treatment and a month in jail before expulsion, while the State Department said the charges were trumped up. Wards greeted by U S Army band, with W J Sebald of General MacArthur’s staff attending.
In Rome Georgia on December 19 a federal judge declared a mistrial in the first mass civil rights trial. Ten defendants including Dade County Sheriff John W. Lynch and six private citizens faced a two count indictment alleging conspiracy to arrest seven Black men April 2 and surrender them to a Ku Klux Klan mob for whipping near Hooker. Judge Hooper cited jurors’ failure to reach an agreement after the trial began November 21.
The First Methodist Church plans a $250,000 sanctuary to accompany the $250,000 educational building already under construction. Rev. A M Serex says the quarterly conference authorized repeating the large fundraising effort. Donations will start immediately to begin the sanctuary campaign without delaying current commitments.
More than 150 farmers and businesspeople from northeast Louisiana parishes will travel to southern Alabama and central Georgia to study long running hog-raising practices. Vernon LaCour of Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company announced the plan. the tour starts February 5, sponsored by the Louisiana Delta Council. A preliminary visit by LaCour, W. H. Farmer, and Jim Stanley connected with extension service specialists and U. S. Steel farm agents, and noted Georgia and Alabama producers grow their own swine feed.
Sheriff Bailey Grant reported two youths, Otha Anthoney Jr. 11 of Hamburg Arkansas and James Davis 18 of Bastrop, are jailed on 1000 bond for auto theft. The stolen Leon Johnson car, recovered in Shreveport after an October 19 theft, had been repainted and fitted with new accessories. Davis faces prior burglary charges and is wanted in Colfax for a bogus check. Anthoney was arrested in Hamburg and sent to the parish jail. The pair are suspected in three ArkansAS burglaries and used stolen auto parts, two rifles, and three shotguns from Wilmot, Arkansas. Davis was arrested by Bastrop sheriffs. Anthoney was transferred here Sunday.
