Milo Thompson reports from New York on a London bombing scene near the AP building. He describes a crater, wrecked watermain work, gas mains exposed, and resilient shelter occupants in deep underground stations while noting ongoing repairs and a somber, moving tableau of life amid destruction.
The Sea Board Sunbeam passenger train and an Atlantic Coast Line freight collided half a mile south of Zephyr Hills Florida at 7 30 this morning. Engineer Ben Green Tampa about 50 was killed. Porter Jessie George Tampa was seriously injured and taken to Dade City hospital. Other Sunbeam passengers from Tampa Lake Orion Cincinnati Cleveland and Columbus sustained various injuries. Fireman E F McLeod said the engineer died in his arms as the collision occurred.
Twelve special trains will move 7,425 soldiers of the 32nd division from Camp Beauregard to Michigan and Wisconsin for Christmas. Two Milwaukee trains carry 1,100 guardsmen to that city, others depart Saturday noon with the last at 4 15 p.m. About 4,500 troops remain at the camp. Reveille is January 2. Trip cost ranges from $20 to $25.
The parcel post window at the local post office will stay open until 9 p.m. daily for stamp sales stamped paper and parcel post mailing starting Thursday announced by James R. Wooten post master.
Washington reports say the Roosevelt administration authorized Britain to negotiate new war material contracts, potentially totaling 3 billion dollars, while exploring a high command for defense. Morgenthau noted no contracts would be signed without action on lease lending and ships would be paid in cash.
Clyde William Buchanan and his 15 year old son were hunted across the Cumberland mountains after a pistol fight at a trailer camp left Deputy Sheriff George W. Fisher dead and two others wounded. The elder Buchanan died four hours after a posse closed in near Wheeler Virginia.
In Chicago on December 19 the federal court dropped an indictment against Western Union Telegraph Company and 11 individuals for conspiracy to violate lottery laws by sending horse racing results across state lines. Judge William H. Holly sustained a demurrer to the April indictment, with most defendants linked to M. L. Annenberg, the former racing news magnate now imprisoned for tax evasion.
Secretary Stimson announced a national effort to improve health and sanitary conditions near army posts. A committee will work with law enforcement to curb undesirable persons and places, expand recreational facilities, and protect draftees from exploitation in nearby towns, starting with Fort Benning.
In a Commons address on December 19 Prime Minister Churchill warned that German invasion remains the supreme threat. He noted new air attack setups, suggested weather may have eased sieges, and said Hitler may plan a new form of activity within two months. Churchill also hinted Britain would be well armed in 1941 and capable of offensive action in other theaters.
In Nassau the Duke and Duchess of Windsor arrive aboard the Southern Cross after a nine day voyage. The duchess has a tooth extraction and jaw surgery while the duke meets Roosevelt on Bahamian waters about a Mayaguana defense base site for the United States. A bill to purchase the site is set for a colonial legislature session tonight.
Washington December 19 President Roosevelt nominated Robert P Patterson of New York to be undersecretary of war a new position created under a bill approved this week. He also renominated Walter M W Splawn of Texas to the Interstate Commerce Commission for a term ending December 31 1947.
The 26,100 ton battleship Arkansas lightly damaged a freighter Melrose about 3 am off Sea Girl Jersey shore. The Melrose, 5,148 tons, beached on Red Hook flats after steering to New York harbor under its own power. Arkansas carried 500 naval reservists and Rear Admiral Le Breton. no injuries reported.
The United States Weather Bureau in New Orleans forecast cloudy skies with rain tonight and Friday in the Twin Cities, with a low around 58. A morning reading showed the mercury at 478 degrees and Selman Field observers reported. The Louisiana outlook noted clouds and rain tonight and Friday with slightly warmer temperatures and easterly to southeasterly winds along the coast.
Helsinki December 19 Kisto Ryti acting president since last summer was elected president by the electoral college with 288 votes to 12 for Urho Castren. Ryti, 51, previously prime minister during the Winter War and long a Finnish finance leader, will serve the remainder of Kyosti Kallio's term ending March 1943.
Nashville officials granted a $20 monthly pension to 84 year old Bob Skinner who served as an unofficial city hall errand boy for many years, though he never held formal employment with the city.
British general headquarters reports 31 546 Italian prisoners captured since the western desert offensive began ten days ago including 1 626 officers. Thousands more are being evacuated while remnants around Bar dia Libya are described as precarious. Also 18 Italian planes were destroyed at Benina airfield in a major RAF raid described as among the heaviest of the African campaign.
Dec 19 London dispatch reports Mr and Mrs John Allen of Norfolk Virginia among those lost when the liner Western sank. The tragedy adds to the list of victims from the vessel disaster and authorities continue investigations into the incident.
Charles DuBois from Coushatta Louisiana enlisted to cover his brother Harvey who was ill with the flu. After signing papers and passing the exam he learned he is the actual soldier and must remain in service while hoping for a remedy.
A local appeal urges quick donations to the Good Fellows fund as total contributions near 700 dollars. The Salvation Army and West Monroe Welfare League prepare to distribute food clothes and toys on Christmas Eve. Contributions should be sent to the News-Star-World.
Allied dispatches report Greek forces pushing into Albania as Italians pulled back from Klisura and Tepeleni. British Prime Minister Eden cited 30,000 Italian prisoners captured in North Africa and minimal Allied losses as French and Greek fronts stabilize along the frontlines.
Tokyo dispatch reports Yosuke Matsuoka pleads for the United States to stay out of war warning of Armageddon. U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Grew contests Matsuoka’s claim that China fate is largely America sentiment, while noting Americans’ interests beyond sentiment. Matsuoka says Japan desires a civilizing mission and invites any nation to join, as Grew counters with U.S. rights and obligations.
