A. N. Robinson was named parish chairman and E. C. Gibson city chairman by a committee at the Virginia hotel to plan the celebration for Roosevelt's birthday on January to aid infantile paralysis. The group, chaired by R. McS Jeeter, aims to fund the March of Dimes through local drives with half of proceeds staying local. Miss Mary Benoit was named vice chairman as the committee includes J. L. Keenan John M. Breard and George Lofton.
New Orleans December 18 Lt Col William D Shaffer said committees would be named to aid each local selective service board in obtaining employment for men finishing their year of training or rejected from service. An effort will be made to have the men reinstated or find new jobs.
British R A F reports fascist troops retreating toward Derna Libya eight miles west of Tobruk as bombers hit the marching columns between Bardia and Tobruk. Haile Selassie revolt in Ethiopia gains momentum with British support and Ayaffairs across the Libyan front suggest Bardin isolated as Allied forces press a direct assault.
Britain admitted it could not win the war without the army striking deep into axis countries. A ministry statement cited about 2,000,000 in the army and 1,000,000 in the home guard, warning there is no closed season for invasion and mobile forces must stay ready to crush any landings.
Gordon Scott of Montreal financial adviser to Canada’s munitions minister and at least five other people perished when the liner Western Prince was torpedoed 550 miles off Ireland. Survivors, including Howe and his assistants E. P. Taylor and Col. W. C. Woodward, arrived at the port describing a brave rescue. Government reports show 26369 workers on army camp construction payrolls in the Alexandria area. Camp Livingston near Alexandria houses 12700 workers for the 32nd division, Camp Claiborne has 11600, Camp Beauregard 460, and an artillery-range airport camp under a separate office. The construction quartermaster staff totals 960. WPA projects employ 376 at the airport and 133 at Camp Beauregard.
Middlesboro Ky December search widens for Clyde William Buchanan and his 19 year old son after deputy George W. Fisher was killed and Chief George Minton and Patrolman P L Perry were wounded in a dawn shooting. Bell County officials said 150 officers and tracking dogs combed a wooded border area.
The War Department announced the 36th pursuit group will move permanently from Langley Field Virginia to Puerto Rico. The 90th and 92nd air corps squadrons move from Selma Alabama to Barksdale Field Louisiana for temporary duty and training.
The crown princess of the Netherlands arrived in Washington for a three day visit to the White House as the guest of President and Mrs. Roosevelt. Accompanied by Baron de Voa and an accompanying lady in waiting, she traveled by rail from Ottawa. Undersecretary Sumner Welles and other officials greeted the royal party upon arrival.
