An early morning blaze at Aquinas Hall on the Providence College campus in Rhode Island trapped residents. Firemen rescued an unidentified girl from a dormitory window as seven students perished in the fire.
Rain slick conditions produced at least 17 accidents across Ouachita Parish by noon, with 12 in Monroe and two at South Fifth Street exit of I 20 in West Monroe. Wrecks included two-car, five-vehicle, and bus-car collisions on streets and highways including College DeSiard Wood Hall Lamy Lane Louisville Avenue Milhaven Road U S 80 La 15 and near the GM Plant and Baptist Children's Home. No injuries were reported.

Irby Joseph Ducote, 49, was booked with murder after the death of his wife Marie Ducote from a chest wound at their home 1501 Elizabeth St West Monroe. He was jailed at Ouachita Parish after initial processing at West Monroe Correctional Center. Funeral plans set for 2 30 p.m. Wednesday at Hixson Brothers with Elder Sam Sidders and Reverend T Earl Ogg officiating. Burial in Twin Cities Memorial Gardens.

A hair dryer sparked a four story blaze at Aquinas Hall on Providence College campus. Seven women died and at least 15 were injured as residents fled into freezing weather. two leapt to their deaths before ladders could reach them. The fire damaged top floor rooms and long hallway. sprinklers and fire escapes were absent. Names were not released.
Railroad officials ordered a two mile evacuation around the Collinston derailment site after 24 cars left the tracks before dawn. Fifteen families remain displaced as crews remove toxic chemicals from the derailed tanks and transfer them to safer containers.
The Richardson Junior High School Girls Ensemble hosts a Friday 7 p.m. Christmas program in the junior high gym inviting the public. West Monroe native Marshall L. Fisher son of Mr and Mrs O L Fisher Jr of 1117 Avant Road will receive his degree at commencement ceremonies Saturday at Memphis State University.
