A special election in Ouachita parish approved the junior college project 654 by 654 to 72 in popular votes. Property support totaled $4,110,223 for and $1,293,707 against with a one mill tax for ten years. Some small polling places did not report, but the overall result favored the college in all voting places.
The Mona falcone, a Los Angeles gambling barkentine, defied authorities for thirty days before being forced to anchor off San Pedro after a storm wrecked the Blue Sea. Long standing quarrel between Robert Ricker and his brother William over a girl led to an early morning shooting and both men dying after separate self poisoning. Sisters alerted police as William returned home to a confrontation. Robert confessed to shooting and then took poison. The girl had married another man nine years earlier.
Baton Rouge reports state supervisor E A Conway says current collections under the new severance tax law could reach nearly 2 million dollars this year, about a 50 percent rise. For the quarter ended September 30, total receipts were 432,958.12, with August and September under the 1928 law totaling 326,308.01. The last quarter exceeded the prior quarter by 125,179.81 and rose 103,620.02 over the same quarter in 1927.
