Slaughter Bandit Killed by Escapee in Saline Hills

Tom Slaughter, famed outlaw, was shot in the back by J C Howard an escaped convict who freed Slaughter and others from the penitentiary. Howard surrendered with others as posse furthers a hunt for two more escapees Jack Buster and Willis Cannon. The incident follows Slaughter's long crime spree and prison escapes with the six men prior to his death in Saline County.

Four Power Pacific Peace Pact Drafted To Replace Old Alliance

A ten year four nation agreement among United States France Great Britain and Japan preserves existing rights in Pacific insular possessions and provides for joint diplomacy and a twelve month withdrawal option after ten years. Slaughter slain in prison break pursuit in Saline County

The killer Slaughter was killed by a white man who helped free him from the state penitentiary. Sheriff J J Crow confirms the death and notes one of the five fleeing black prisoners is dying nearby. The white companion who shot Slaughter and three other negroes are in custody as the pursuit ends.

Monroe Elks Plan New Club House in South Grand Street

Monroe lodge No. 454 B P O Elks will buy a lot next to their current club house on South Grand street to build a handsome new home. Mrs Georgia S Barringer told the lodge of the property purchase and plans call for an early drive to raise funds. The Elks home will be one of the handsomest in North Louisiana with gymnasium roof garden reading rooms and additional features.

Free Leonidas Barkdull Faulk Memorial Clinic to Open

Monroe to open a free clinic on January 1 named in memory of Leonidas Barkdull Faulk. It will be run by St. Francis sanitarium staff with Dr. J B Vaughan as physician and Ruth Webb as nurse in charge. Furnishings were donated a year ago. now city parish federal aid enables operation with ambulatory care and ten free hospital beds.

Texarkana reports a fire of undetermined origin last night totally destroyed the Fouke Grain Company grain elevator and hay warehouse with losses estimated at 75000 dollars. El Dorado Oil Field Moves on for Louisiana Strike

Locations have been set for ten or twelve oil wells in Union parish on the El Dorado field by large companies and private interests. Garden specialists visit Monroe for parish projects

H C Smith of Baton Rouge, state garden specialist, will spend five to six days in Ouachita parish next week to assist Mrs. Jewell McQuiller in school garden and home improvement work. Volunteer clubs formed in Fairbanks Swartz Drew Claiborne and Cypress communities.

Directors to Tour "Tourists Way" in Arkansas and Louisiana

The Arkansas board of directors of the Lone Star Route Association plans a highway tour in Arkansas and Louisiana. Members include John H. Keel of Newport L. L. Vandervort of Paragould W. D. Hearn of Pine Bluff and W. D. Trotter of Dermott. The tour will cover the highway between Monroe and Alexandria within a few weeks.

Architect Smith Completes Plans For New School

J W Smith Monroe architect says Vernon high school in Vernon Jackson parish will be awarded in January. The two story building has eight rooms and an auditorium, costing 25000 dollars. Smith has done extensive school work and expects more in the coming year.

Survey shows oil and gas drives across Monroe area

In the Monroe gas field covering Ouachita Lincoln Richland Caldwell Jackson Union Morehouse and Franklin parishes 154 wells have been drilled since exploration began. There are 84 producers mainly in Ouachita Morehouse and Union with 70 dry holes, and several parishes report oil tests alongside gas.
